Horse is currently blanket clipped- not in massive work and I like him to keep a bit of hair through the coldest of winter. Now I usually clip the whole lot off just before he starts moulting as I'm very allergic and asthmatic and brushing hair out for weeks/months really effects my chest I can clip in a dust mask and with antihistamines etc and its be recovered by the following morning. By this point its also warmed up a bit and less chance of really awful weather.
This year however the clipped area hasn't grown back other than cat hairs on his face the rest of him looks pretty freshly clipped. I'm guessing its to do with our weird weather maybe or the fact he's been better rugged this winter to avoid the weight loss we had last.
What's the latest you'd do a last clip? If I do it soon am I going to be able to blend it all in do we think?! (He is going to win best turned out this spring with my daughter so its important in other ways ;))

As a fellow asthmatic i feel your pain!

Normally I'd say leave him, but as your reaction to moulting is so extreme i'd be inclined to say whip it off now.

I have 1 who will be showing in March so he's had it all off this week - the kids ponies 1 had a hunter clip in autumn which like you only has cat hairs and I'm leaving her as its only the legs and we have another coming back off loan who hasn't been clipped at all but when he does moult he does it quickly so I just groom him constantly (how it feels) for a fortnight and its done- but the ponies show season doesn't start until later.

Good luck in the Best Turned Out- looking forward to show report!!! :D

I've just done all of mine - most hadn't regrown very well and so the tidy up was very necessary ... they now look shiny and tidy and I'm sure they'll look fine in summer too ... It's a bit of a guesstimation science, really. I tend not to worry about it and come March I've never been horrified by my horses haha

mm, I may have to get my butt into gear and drag those evil clippers back into action then! :(
Best turned out is becoming a little personal! The first year she did it she came 3rd out of a big class so we were pleased by this and picked up a few tips!
Last year we had a second again big class so happy but flaming horse refused to load so had to be walked to the show and poo'd on his white socks on arrival where the class was already in the ring!
We have HIGH hopes this year ;)
