The shoot where I pick up mostly changed hands this season and for the first time went mainly partridge. Consequently we started our season 6 weeks earlier than usual!

My dogs are not very used to picking partridge, just the odd few that some of the other usual pheasant shoots put down. We have discovered that they hold little scent, you have to get right on them straightaway and they hide in little holes!! Flyn and Toby can't believe how light and easy they are!!

The Partridge pretty much finished by November and then onto pheasants as normal, but not so many as usual and we have had lots of small days.

Today was the last day for this shoot, another small day of just 100 birds and the birds are very scarce now.

So, up early to do the horses, came back and OH has cooked a full English breakfast - yummy!! Arrived at shoot a bit late but we always hang around for ages for the guns to get ready anyway, so time for a cup of coffee and a good gossip!

Just four of us picking up today so all in one truck with nine dogs!

First drive and you have to walk up quite a long steep track to get to the drive, some of the guns were so unfit I feared one of them may have a heartattack before he got there, I even offered him to lead Flyn who always pulls on the lead, thinking he might help to pull him up!!

Few birds, as expected and my dogs didn't get to pick up any

But the guns were happy and we were given plenty of sloe gin after the drive

Second drive, more birds. I was marking two guns and at the end one of them told me he thought there was a hen bird in some gorse and thank God Flyn found it as they all stood around watching us! More Sloe gin followed!

Back for soup (chicken), bread rolls and sausages and Port

Third drive was one that we haven't shot for ages but the Keeper was hoping a few birds had come back in and he was right it was excellent and lots of very high birds, unfortunately the guns were not very good shots but again they were all very jolly. More glasses of sloe gin and then some concoction that came out of Thermos flask which I think contained whiskey, brandy and oranges - hmm it was really yummy and warming! I wish I had asked that gun for the recipe!

Fourth drive - always a good one this one, very high birds with pheasant and partridge mixed, picked up 8 birds on this drive. (The guns went off before we got back so no drink

Fifth and final drive, just the most beautiful setting and again very high and fast birds. I stood in a gateway so I could mark two fields. One gun shot a high hen bird which spiralled down, Flyn was on it like a shot, watching and waiting for it to fall, he raced up the very steep slope, just about to get it when the damn thing suddenly flew up again and I didn't see where it went. So we spent a good long time looking for that one!

Back to the barn for full roast pork and all the trimmings plus a glass of red wine! Hic

I really have had the most wonderful season, both Toby and Flyn have behaved impeccably throughout. Flyn has brought his birds to hand nearly every time which is such a relief and Toby hardly whines anymore - but even better he has stayed sound throughout
smile.gif
When he was first diagnosed with OCD the vet told me he wouldn't see 5 if I didn't have the operation - well here he is aged 5 and completed a whole season.

I have had days of being in charge and days of driving the game cart - but I still can't drive a quad bike
blush.gif
I have loved every minute of it and love both my dogs to bits - they never let me down

Just one more day at another shoot next week (very big shoot will expect a 400 bird day - so dogs will be busy!), a couple of beaters days (where I may do some shooting!) and then thats it - end of the season

Roll on September

Fantastic report!

Sounds like a cracking end to the season for that shoot. Next day sounds like a corcker!

Toby & Flyn sound like they are doing you proud! And why not!! Fantastic news on the soundness as well.

Brill write up & well done on your season. Have fun at the beaters days!

Sounds Fantastic, I would love to go out on a shoot, I just wish I had been so interested init when my grandad was alive - he was the gamekeeper and would have relished the thought of having a keen follower in his granddaughter!

Sounds as though flyn and Toby are fantastic gun dogs, Do you have any pics?

Thalie, you know, I only got into picking up and shooting just 10 years ago through a friend and have loved it ever since. My father is dead now but unbeknown to me at the time he was alive, apparently he used to run a gundog club so perhaps it is in the genes!

I do have plenty of pics of Toby and Flyn but not from today, I find it just too much with leads, whistle, priest, carrier etc to manage a camera as well!! God knows how the others on here do it!

Fantastic report as always Ravenwood

Flyn and Toby are fab sounding dogs

No wonder you were all jolly with all that drink

Sounds like a great end of the season for all of you. We haven't been partridge shooting in a long time, it has gotten very dear over here.

Oh, forgot to say to you. No Clandeboye this year
frown.gif
Unfortunately with my uncle out of work we can't afford it. Fingers crossed for next year though.

Oh shame about Clandeboye - it looked fantastic, but nevermind, its not going to disappear and lets hope you get to go next year

Beaters day is great fun. Everybody who has been at the shoot through the season, ie beaters, pickers up and loaders all get to have a days shooting.

Quite often, such as in my case, it is the other half who has the gun so there are plenty of people left to beat and pick up. You have never seen so many guns in your life and they stand all over the place!!

Plenty of booze and usually we all bring something, such as the beaters bring starters (we have a main meal anyway), the pickers up will bring the desserts and the loaders will bring the cheese etc.

And we all have loads of fun and party into the night

Fab report! (and lots of sloe gin!) Well done to Toby too!

My Mum said the shoot she was on last wednesday, the birds were coming so thick and fast she had all 3 or 4 (I'm not sure how many she took!) dogs out retrieving at once, and her little star cocker was literally piling up the dead pheasants, and bringing the runners to hand!
grin.gif
There was so many around, even the IWS managed to get into the swing of things and had his first ever retrieve!
grin.gif

I can't believe it is so near the end of the season already!

I m really hoping Otto will come on leaps and bounds this year, and maybe get his first little taster next year!

To be perfectly honest Gina I hardly shoot at all anymore. When I did get into it, I had really good days when I hit everything (clays that is) and then other days I couldn't hit a bloody thing - but even worse I didn't know why I was missing. Also I seem to bring the gun up all wrong and give myself a huge great big bruised lump on my jaw. I swear that for days after people thought I was in an abusive relationship!!

Nowadays I am more than happy to let OH have the gun and I just pick up - although last Beaters Day someone lent me their gun for the last drive and I got a pheasant and a duck - I was smiliing all night!!
smile.gif

I'm sure you were smiling all night
smile.gif
Does your OH enjoy the shooting then too?

My uncle kept making me practise how to hold the gun, taking on and off etc (whilst it was unloaded) before I was allowed to even think about taking a shot. I have quite a weird dip just where you rest it against your shoulder so it just settles nciely in there
grin.gif
He knows someone who has been shooting years and years and yet still bruises himself.

I had my spaniel at around the same time as you have Otto and I took him out after Christmas the next season, kept him on the lead to watch what was going on and then let him off to sweep after. If the perfect retrieve occurred, ie dead bird, no other dogs around I would let him get it. But - I started my lab far too young and it really blew his mind, fortunately I was lucky and he has turned out fantastic but I will always err on the side of caution now especially if you are going out on a big shoot where birds are raining down.

OH does a bit of shooting and he is a really good shot - he should do it more often.

I borrowed a pad that goes under your coat to protect your shoulder which was lovely but unfortunately there is nothing to protect your face. I just don't know what I was doing wrong, but we went to a clay shoot and after the second stand I could feel the huge swelling on my jaw and called it a day
blush.gif

I am sure if I had some more lessons it would be fine but to be honest what with horses, dogs etc - can I really justify the cost of shooting as well?!

That was the sort of time I was thinking for him really, but it all depends on how we get on between now and then!
I am in no rush, he's not going anywhere, and he's got loads to learn before I trust him, even on the lead!!
grin.gif

My Parents are big fans of the slowly slowly approach with their dogs and it has definately rubbed off on me!
grin.gif

Are you maybe leaning your cheek too far over the gun? M says that is a common mistake, people leaning over as opposed to just leaning on if you know what I mean?

Oh don't even talk to me about the price, it's shocking isn't it! I love going to the Game Fairs and looknig at all the beautiful guns you know you'll never be able to afford.

(Although OH bought me a lovely Le Chameau jacket for Christmas
grin.gif
)

M is probably right!

Lucky you to get a Chameau!!
smile.gif
I must get myself a new shooting coat - at present I wear a horsey one and I am sure I must stink out the truck!!

What a great report. My OH and son are involved with the local small village syndicate shoot (good day is 50+ birds, best day ever was 90). They have 9 guns. Generally if my 15 year old is shooting he will always get the most birds even though he rarely shoots (gets a day bought for birthday and xmas and generally gets beaters days both there and another shoot he beats for.

We take our 3.5 yr old lab beating and have tried really hard with her retrieve, she just doesn't like to pick up feather - will retrieve rabbit, balls, toys, dummys etc. Hopefully she will eventually get the idea. She is great beating though as she is small and quick and great at working the thick cover.

What a great report.
It was one of my ambitions to try shooting so we were taken clay shooting while down in Hampshire and a friend let me use his wifes 20 bore. I was rubbish trying to outwit the clays until I stopped trying and practically closed my eyes once it had been launched
laugh.gif
I started hitting them regularly then - it was a brilliant day out.
