Well last night after handing in my notice at work, landing a brilliant new job and feeling on top of the world, I thought a happy pootle in the school would top off my week! My fresh, spring grass loaded 6yo had other ideas!

I tacked up led him to the mountain block and went to hop on, he went to charge forward so I slapped his shoulder and backed him up. Got on and my arse was only in the sadle 30 secs, enough to get my stirrup and reach forward to adjust his headpiece when he did his best Hi Ho Silver impression clouting mestraight on the face (peak of my ventair) and rendering me dazed, on return to earth he bronched a few times with his head between his knees. I growled and pulled his head up which initiated another crowd waving rear, buck and twist -planting my arse firmly on the school floor!

I was so cross, I got up found a lunge line and did 20 mins of trot/canter before getting back on. Stood very still for mounting, worked very sweetly on some transition before I power trotted him round our 'block' (30 min route of steep hilly roads and tracks) which usually he would have created at... on my return, after he had powered around with me pony club kicking and growling everytime he thought about a spook or hesitation - I felt he had given his all, gave him a good wash off and to bed.

I however was suffering severe nausea, tunnel vision and dizziness - chatted away to my friends and stupidly drove myself home. On arrival I was drifting in and out of consciouness lacking sensation in my arms/hands, husband called the NHS helpline who sent a paramedic who called an ambulance! I, like many of us horsey folk, had not eaten all day which had meant blood sugars were terribly low, oxygen levels were very high due to panic breathing which made the dizziness and nausea worse. I was sent home after seeing a doctor at 11.30pm unable to ride for 10days. Today I have CHRONIC whiplash, still suffering with concussion symptoms and have a god awful headache in my right eye.

I have been looking at skull cap options today for everyday riding as the fixed peak on my ventair has done most of the neck damage. I have cut the big mans food right down and he will have a few days in the field before his week of lungeing/longreining and groundwork. And I will NEVER EVER ride having not eaten EVER again! Please cheer me up and help me get better :)

Oh God you poor thing! I've also got a Ventair peaked cap and a horse which sounds a bit similar to yours and it's something which has concerned me for a while....
Well at least you've nothing broken AND you got back on which a lot of people wouldn't have done, so well done you!
Keep taking the painkillers - When I've ever needed to take them, I tend to find they work even better when combined with a dose of alcohol....x

Oh crikey! What a nightmare day. I am the same re. Lightheaded if I don't eat regularly.

Look after yourself and I hope you feel better really soon.

Ooh poor you! I'm pretty sure most of us have ridden or driven home after falls like that. I got back once after coming off to find that my skull was split down one side, showing the lining of the velvet! I had wondered why drivers were staring at me! I'm quite good at eating during the day, now, but yes, when I was younger I would often forget to have lunch - especially when I was exercising two horses.

Always have a cereal bar handy and a banana. In the summer I take a bottle of pop with me, too. Vimto, naturally, because I'm a Northerner!

Ouch! I think you and your 6yo are about to become friends with Mr Lunge Line! I had the same with my 6yo a couple of weeks ago...

Blimmin horses, they know how to bring you back to earth (quite literally). I go weak and dizzy if I don't eat regularly, that's why its important to always have a tuck box of chocolate, crisps and other 'medical essentials' in your car :)

Hope you are feeling better soon.

feeling better already :) such a heart warming response - I also love Vimto (and originally northen!!). Proper chuffed on the new jobs so I appreciate your congratulations a lot. And Mr. Lungeline is a regular visitor but he and Mr. Ropehalter may be coming out more often this week :D

You poor thing! It's a wonder you were able to ride for so long and hard afterwards. Regarding the hat though. If it did not have a peak, you may have broken your nose! I don't know which is worse. All my hats are fixed peak bar one skull cap which I hardly ever wear..

I agree Wagtail, this is what I am adding up... I like my face the way it looks! but I also think, any harder and I would have cracked a vertebrae or seriously damaged my eye sockets with a fixed...

The riding long and hard post trauma was definitely adrenalin, I am utterly terrified of hacking him out on my own... still- what a feeling powering through all the muddy bits of a track that I would usually have had to get off and walk him through - just goes to show how much confidence I can give him even if I wasnt with it ;)

Todays pain is definitely worth it just for the tiny glimmer of being the event rider I used to be :happy sob:

Crikey nasty!! Kudos to your bravery!!! I have to say anything that reared like that with me would be chucked out in the field asap and I would probably go home, cry and not ride again so well done!
Get the ventair without the peak. I need a new crash hat for eventing as my old ventair is about 5years old now and they don't allow fixed peaks XC (I was a bit stroppy about that as my new one has a peak but now i'm not!), i was just going to go for the peakless version and get a nice velvet for it when it's not got the pink cover on.... I find that once you are a champion head anything else doesn't feel as comfey but happy to be proven wrong :).
I'm glad you are OK!!! Naughty horse, so it's one pony nut per meal from now on for him and carbs galore for you ;).

:D yes, turns out my bestie yard buddy got dumped last night too, her mare is usually 100% so there must be something in our grass this week. Indeed 1 pony nut is more than enough :D xx

I got binned 3 weeks ago.. and had pretty much the same symptoms! i got up and was so mad i marched him round the school to see what he'd spooked at. And my memory is hazy from there.. i just know i was very mad at a&e for the nurses and doctors cutting off my best breeches and my favourite hoody, not to mention OH's bike jacket! Naughty horses..

J has sloppy green poo's and I nearly got bronched off jumping in the week. The grass is definitly out in force!!!! Hang on to your hats ladies, Yeeeha!!

OP, you are one brave lady getting back on after that little display, Im with FW, anything that even looks like it might rear is history!! Normally super chilled Che has had to be led in and out of his paddock with a bridle this week, he def has "spring grassitus", runny green poo and an attitude! Once this ground dries up I will be lunging and longreining for a while I think before I dare consider hopping back on board. Ditto the tuckbox of emergency supplies, I can go from being Ok to really light headed and woozy quite quickly so always keep chocolate, grapes and a few biccies in the car. Hope youre feeling much better soon,

I fell of my 6yro (in a few days) 3 times today jumping, you have my sympathies!

I had a bad concussion a few years back (hit the back of my head falling off a friends mare), it's really horrible and makes you feel out of it for quite a while and like you described, you carry on doing things like normal even though your visions going, you have a splitting headache, feel sick, loose some feeling and then you drift between concious and unconscious - horrible!

Hope you feel better soon! I have a skull cap for everyday riding for those reasons, I also just prefer them in general!

Thanks for everyone's kind words! Husband just had a moan about being deprived of decent hot meals.... What a tw*t I say!! I'm having a glass of wine as earlier instructed and saying a big cheers to my brave pants :-D x
