For a while anyway as no more outings planned due to imminent baby arrival
.
Lex2501 took Jae and I to Larkhill for the BVRC event. They did the Intermediate which was run over the BE90 course from earlier in the year.
Getting him all prepared now is a bit of an issue. I can't really ride i'm far too big, he has had 4 different people ride him this week to keep him ticking over which is a lot and must be a bit confusing for him. It is also hard just oiling his feet and getting the stud holes cleaned out and things like that. I'm lucky he is so easy to do. His breakfast face at 5am in the morning!:-
Looking very swish:-
He was dead cute at the event, sucking gently on my jumper while I was putting on his dressage bridle and being super affectionate and cuddly for some reason!
They didn't have long to warm up for the dressage, about 10 minutes as they were running early and the steward was quite desperate to get them in there
. Lex and Jae did a lovely test, he broke into canter in one of the first trot movements but it was really nice to watch and I was so pleased, he tried so hard and even with the mistake they got 33.
The SJ was fab! Lex rode him so so nicely and they got a lovely clear round, she was riding him perfectly into a showjumper spot on the uprights (which he can be blasie over) and he was pinging with feet to spare and it was one of those rounds that looked in control, neat and flowing, he was never going to touch a pole. Rubbish picture alert:-
XC we were really excited about. Long old way to the start phew!! Nice mile long walk for me lol!! He warmed up fab jumping the warm up fences beautifully. He set off without a backwards glance looking much more grown up than he did at T-down. I could see quite a lot and they were cruising around jumping everything out of stride.
They got nearly to the end and the sunken road and he knew the drop was there and he just didn't even want to go near it
. He had a stop at the nasty one they have in the 90 at Tweseldown and I suspect he's spooked himself and is now unsure how to do them. If we had known this issue had popped up we could have worked on it but we didn't so not a lot you can do in competition! They had to go around it. He jumped up the step great and flew confidently home through the water and over a massive ditch no problems and came through the finish looking very pleased with himself!
At first I felt really frustrated because if he had just popped down the drop (which he has done drops fine before!) he would have been placed and I just so want him to be perfect for Lex. However now I have slept on it I can see it's just one of those horsie things that crops up with every horse at some point, he's an inexperienced animal and he doesn't understand that particular question.
Lex rides him amazingly, she is so calm and competent with him and tbh I was in danger of feeling not good enough for my boy.. so in a way it has a silver lining.. as it has made me realise just how much his trust in me works for us.
It has been a massive benefit having Lex ride him for me and I want to thank her one billion times over. It's been a fantastic learning curve for Jae and I can see clearly the areas I need to work myself on to be able to carry on her good work. I can also see now how well I have done with him in the past and not to be so silly with thinking i'm rubbish.
I think if I was staying in the UK Lex could probably take Jae quite far she is MUCH braver than me!!! As it is I want to recomend her to anyone looking to support a talented amature event rider. I would not trust anyone else with competing my absolute pride and joy. She rides quietly and firmly and her instinct with them is spot on. She really cares about the horses and loves them to bits and everything she does is in their best interests. I'm so lucky I found her
.
Jae will be kept ticking over by his army of fans untill mini FW makes an arrival and then he's going to have a few weeks off sunning himself in the field while I figure out how to be a mummy! Then the plan is to do a couple small bits and pieces with him before we go to the US.
We have a XC course at my yard which will be open by the time I start riding so we can get drop practice in before going out again
. I'm not worried about it in the slightest, I know with some patience and few days spent quietly practicing at home he'll figure out he's brilliant at them and then he won't be bothered by them again. He can do them everyday if need be!
Sadly no photographer at the event! I'm quite upset about that as was looking forward to another beautiful photo of him!
Thanks for reading.
