Hi all

My mare is showing signs of coming into season and I remember last year my vet telling me that the last one of the year can be quite aggressive. Is anyone else's mare showing signs? Is this about the time of final seasons? Last year Tilly was in a bit of a state with her seasons because (we have since found out) the horse next to her was a rig (even his owner was unaware!) and she got into a right state kicking Walls and generally being a stress head despite eventually moving stables.

She was a total witch to ride yesterday so I am hoping this might be why!

Could well be.Our mare has been with us since July and we'd never noticed her coming into season at all.Last week she was grumpy, naughty and seemed to be sensitive around her flanks. She was acting completely out of character and I mentioned it to a friend who is a vet,who said it was most likely her last season of the year.

Time is right for mares to be transitional - and transitional seasons CAN be more 'obvious' than seasons during the main breeding season. They are usually shorter - unless a mare has a persistent anovulatory follicle.

Of course, some mares come into season through the winter as well!

Thanks both that has given me some hope as her behaviour was beginning to improve in the school but yesterday she was the worst she has been for months.

Janet we thought her seasons were continuing last winter because of her frankly crazy behaviour to the point I had an implant put in. It obviously made no difference as it was being stabled next to what she perceived to be a stallion who could get his nose over the adjoining wall she was objecting to poor love. She is this year stabled next to her best friend so is much more settled so hopefully this season will be the end of it for this year!

Yes my mare has been a bit shall we say "flighty" and flirty. Definitely something going on with her, the recent warm temps may have something to do with things too. I give her NAF Oestress all year round and I do think it makes a difference.

Mine is on agnus castus and it has definitely made her seasons less noticeable this year as her behaviour hasn't changed apart from a bit more vocal which is why it didn't cross my mind that this might be the reason for her bad behaviour until I remembered what the vet said about the transitional season.
