Hi

I gave my boy his final clip late February - and his coat is not looking that great - a few cat hairs comming through which are a bit course. He is well rugged up to try and encourage him that its 'warm'.

His diet is fine - as I know 'bloom' comes from within. He is on 1 large mug Baileys Lo Cal balancer. With good haylage and straw mix at night. And grazing during day - with muzzle!

I had a friend who used to clip in March her TB and had a lovely summer coat.

Im just worried that his summer coat will be affected as planning to show - but TBH he is mostly grey so you can get away with them being clipped as less obvious.

Have I left it too late - I look at others on the yard and there coats are very silky - mines feels course!

All the ones clipped on our yard seemed to be having the same problem! I thought at first it was just my boy - he was clipped beginning of Feb and his coat has these weird whispy bits and baldy bits too. I only got him in April last year and he hadn't been clipped the winter at all, so I don't know if this is just him or something else? So then I started looking at other horses on our yard and seems that many who've been clipped in January/February are looking pretty much the same...

I'm keeping mine slightly under rugged to encourage weight loss (and was a big reason for clipping so late in the season, too) but even those that have been well rugged seem to have the same patchy regrowth.

I never clip after New Year as I find the growth stops about then. I tend to under-rug in early spring to encourage the new coat to come through, I find over-rugging doesn't help the coat to come through.

I've just given my pony a full clip after taking advice from those who've clipped late before. He was showing very little sign of casting a really thick coat and I think his previous owners had him clipped out all year round. Fingers crossed for a good coat as he'll be shown the year but at the end of the day at least he can be worked in comfort now. One of my mares has the cat hairs that you mention too but I've just lightly run the clippers over the top of them to top them off and make her a bit tidier. I didn't want to risk clipping her properly as she is dropping her coat at a good rate of knots.

Same problem, my horse had a blanket clip end of January, the blanket bit is causing her to sweat so much I'm thinking of re-clipping that and the rest and see if she grows a better summer coat, I only got her last September and I dont think she's been clipped before. Dont know whether to risk it or not !!!

Think im gonna have to do my cob he is casting just very slow so think i will go for bib and belly the rest of his summer coat is coming fine its just the long hair underneath and making him sore where his girth lies!
