late cut hay

still using last years hay but running low.our supplier didnt cut untill september.when would you leave it till or would you be happy to use this years hay straight away

I'm going to have to use this years when I bring the horses in, but ideally I'd like to leave it till Christmas.

should be fine to use when you need to. just dont give loads!! on an as req basis. late cut hay has a lower nutritional value. i am feeding june cut hay now and all are fine! holding onto wood!! it is not an ideal world, and hasnt been an ideal summer/autumn for hay!

i'm using May cut hay and have been for a few weeks - no problems for me - but i do thoroughly soak my hay anyway as have a "coughy" mare.

i leave 5 months after it is cut before i feed it to my horses!

I leave for 6 weeks before feeding - and then I try to mix in old and new hay for a couple of weeks/months depending on how much old stuff I have. I also open the new bales and split the sections out so they have a couple of days to dry out a bit and then feed them.
