How good/bad is it really, been cut within the last week so been pretty dry. Believe it's first cut? But late iykwim. Only asking as I can get a load at a very decent price and having to feed hay 24/7 in winter to my little herd like others is expensive. The hay is said to be weed free. It will be for cob types ( apart from one) so fairly good doers.

It will have a slightly lower nutritional value, but by no means should be ''bad'', grass has gone to seed, so the hay will be more fibreous and less sugary in simplistic terms.

I'd rather have late cut hay (got most of mine in last week but more to come still). Nicest hay I've ever had was cut August Bank Hol weekend 3 years ago - it had been a very wet summer and my farmer neighbour waited while everyone else made horrible hay. I bought the lot and it was beautiful stuff.

July is the traditional month to make hay over here. Some is made in June but can be harder to make as its "greener", we have just baled ours but unlike you in the UK we only get one cut and consider ourselves lucky to get that!! We also do haylage and that is done earlier, usually in June, and the silage for the cattle is done in May or June. Our hay is made to feed both Tbs and Sport horses.
