Hi guys, realised I haven't introduced myself properly so hi!

Currently looking after a just turned 3yr old Welsh D, who in my opinion is gorgeous! He is currently standing at 14.2hh. He goes through phases of being brillant and well behaved, to naughty and trying his boundaries, but youngsters eh?! Intend to do inhand showing with him over the summer so he has been bridled and leads nicely in walk and trot. Apart from desensitising him from plastic bags, umbrellas etc what else can I do with him? I don't want to push him or rush anything as I know Welshies mature late so he won't be backed till next year at least.

Anyway, enough babble, here are a few pics. Opinions and CC welcome and expected height?

(Also, will his mane need to be trimmed up for showing? only I love it the way it is :()

ooooh he is very very nice isnt he! not just his colour but his lovely eye! he is looking in just nice condition too. you must be thrilled with him!

the only extra thing I can think of for the showing desensitisation is noise - motorbikes, balloon bursting, clapping, children screaming etc.

good luck with him.

Thank you :) I'm very happy with him. Thanks for the tip about noise, I'll give that a try over the weekend. Don't know where I'll source a motobike though lol

hi - for showing your beautiful cob you should ideally trim up the mane a little to make it tidy - you want to be able to see the shoulder. the tail should be trimed to hock level as the judge will want to see the movement as he walks/trots away. good luck.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! :D I love his mane though! But I guess your right :p Thanks for the tip (even though it wasn't want I wanted to hear :p)

I would not touch is mane or tail at all. If he is a purebred Welsh he is a native breed so please don't go near him with scissors. He is gorgeous. Love the action shots! :)

Believe me domino I don't want scissors to go anywhere near him! I've been looking at loads of pics of D's showing just to get an idea and they all seem to be trimmed to some extent. However only going to be doing local level stuff just to get him out and about so it doesn't matter if he will be au natural! (His beard might need a bit of trimming though ;))

Natives should be tidy, so I would trim his mane a bit. Look at H&H for showing pics of natives, they look better a bit tidier but don't overtrim! I also hate the fashion for lopping off Cs and Ds tails - please leave his on!
He is gorgeous, so pretty. Good luck!

He's gorgeous! Remember to practice walking and trotting him behind another pony and standing him while the other pony trots away :)

football games on the radio are a good idea to play to him when he's in the stable or field (commentary, crowds, shouting, whistling. The perfect thing in my opinion :)

He looks exactly like my boy! Right down to the socks!!!!! Mine just has a huge head  Mine's now rising 5 but I've had him since he was 2 1/2. When he was 3 I was lunging him a bit (no more than 10 mins) and spent a lot of time flapping various things around him. He wasn't that well handled so had to learn the whole rug thing. Boots (velcro!) are a great thing to get them used to, and I used to sit my other horses saddle on him (no girth) just to let him get used to the idea. One of my fave bombproofing exercises is tarpaulin- walking over it, waving it around like a flag, getting them to wear it as a rug etc. Mine loves using his brain for things like that.
p.s I took mine to local shows in hand completely untrimmed (beard and all!) and he still managed to come 3rd, no one told me he looked silly or anything- I too love the long manes (did have to trim his tail when it touched the floor though!) :D

Really?! Do you have any pics? Thanks for the tips, looks like I'll busy for the next few weeks :) x

Yes I have pics, but have no idea how to post them!! :o
I just kept on inventing more 'scary' things to do with mine because he got bored, and when he got bored he got annoying and decided I would make a good plaything!

If you have a photobucket account (easy to set up) upload your pictures in there. Put your cursor over the picture you like, and 4 options will show up. Click on the last one, IMG code and it will copy the code. When writing a post just right click paste or on the keyboard press ctrl and V. And the photo will show up!

Mine seems have a very similar personality to yours by the the sound of it! How is he bred? x

I have a photobucket account but haven't used it for years and forgot password- last time i tried to log in it said i didn't exist, but won't let me set up another one because i already have one
Can't remember his breeding, its on his passport if you want me to go look? I got him from the Winmark stud

Try click "forgotten password" and it will send you your password in an email.

It's ok, don't trouble yourself, I was just curious. Mine's sire is janton philanderer, but can't remember the name of the dam

Here is a pic of his sire:

Gorgeous! I'm hopeless with breeding and bloodlines and things- he was the first horse I got that we knew the parents of! Forget the names now but I know his sire is chestnut and doing quite well driving (although mine hates anything round his sides/ back end!)
will have a play with photobucket and see what I can do, although I swear last time I clicked on the 'forgot password' it told me my email didn't exist! :)

Can't find the photos of when we first got him to upload them on photobucket, but they're on my facebook, here's the link but I don't know if it'll work!

He had a paler mane when he was young, now he's pretty much just plain chestnut.

Had words with my photobucket account and here goes:

This one's him as a baby, the breeder sent it to me- he's the one in the middle

This is him as a 3yr old in his lovely summer coat

Him in the snow- he goes so dark in the winter!

Hope they work!

Yey!! I see pictures, always a good sign :p
The ones of him in the winter look more like yours, he looks so different in his summer coat. Glad I finally worked out how to do it! :D

Wow he is gorgeous! And he does look very similar. What height was he when he was 3? Dexter is 14.2 now, but hope he has some more growing in him.

Thanks for sharing, he is lovely :)

Never measured him when he was 3 but I guessed at 14.1 (same as a friends pony, they seemed the same to me!) He is now just a gnats over 14.2, he was sold to make 14.3.
If they are similar in temperament then beware! :p Just kidding, I love my boy really, some people just misunderstand him! Don't think it helps that he had done next to nothing when I got him- the more you can get them to shows when they are young, the better I think- I only managed to get transport to 1 show while he was still a baby and he was an angel, took him again age 4 and he was a nightmare! Still, he's been pretty angelic since he's been backed, it really seemed to calm him down- think he had to grow up!
Wishing you luck with yours :)
