My young horse has lateral swelling 2 inches below his knee . I've been treating as splint but wondering if it could be anything else . Hes field sound and lunge sound on soft surface now (although I won't keep testing him ) sound trotted on track but not keen on going forward in school . Trouble being he's baby and not being pushed anyway. Only walking him on hack so he doesn't loon in paddock and I will get vet out. He's had restricted turnout cold hosing and been rested . Apart from kick knock or splint I can't think of anything else that would cause splint type swelling. Just like to see if anyone else has some thoughts .

How lateral? Actually on the cannon bone or the tendon behind it? This tendon feels like a bone when the leg in on the floor but when the leg is held up it goes soft (cos its a tendon!).

Not behind leg it's at side of canon on outside . Medial on inside of canon lateral is on outside . Tendon not swollen I've had exp of this unfortunately with different horse, I wondered about check ligament but no swelling . He's not lame but obv being careful . The area I class as splint is very tender .

Yes I am fully aware lateral is on the outside as I have a horse with a lateral branch suspensory injury. If you stand to the near side of the horse for example and feel the outside of the leg you can feel a tendon which feels like a bone when the leg is stood still just behind the cannon bone. When I say behind I mean the next bone along if we are being pedantic. That's what I was talking about.
