why do horses "laugh"

Called a flehman response. Horses have scent glands under their upper lips, they are smelling something.

I think it is something to do with trying to read the scent they are smelling, love the photo.

i knew it was something to do with smelling, but couldnt quite put my finger on it thanks

i was also wondering why horses do it if you scratch them in certain "itchy" spots as my friends call them

A horse's top lip goes all wibbly wobbly when you find his favourite scratching spot because if you were another horse he would be grooming you back (nibbling you). Some horses DO groom their owners back - I think it's a great compliment!

i think most mammals do it aswell
