Right guys.
Im a 20yr old girl whos been driving almost 2 years.

I am desperate for transport so looking into the cheapest/best option!

I have the new license so have diff laws. Id be towing a 14.3hh ish gelding.

So cheapest option. Small car & lorry? 4x4 & trailer? Is it possible to legally tow without taking a trailer test? Is it safe/possible to tow with a normal/estate car?

Iv looked so much online etc & the laws confuse me

YES & YES

This is but one example of legal towing on a B licence - there are many more in the TOWING CLINIC link in my signature at the bottom of this post

Honda CRV - http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/cr-v/fullspecification/
KERB 1643 so unladen would be a little higher but not by much
GVW 2050
Towing capacity 1500

You can tow a trailer on a B licence providing the trailer is not plated at more than 1450 (1450+2050=3500)

The cheval xl trailer is plated at 1400 with an unladen weight of 655 so you can load 745 into it
OR
The IFOR HB401 trailer can be downplated from 1600 to 1450 and it has an unladen weight of 770 so 680 can be loaded into it

SARAH, you find me the car you wish to use and I will give you trailer options for B licence towing if possible for the motor you choose
PS - weight of horse would be handy as well

If you passed after 1st Jan 1997 you need a B+E (I thinks its that) to tow a trailer!!
Many believe that but it is incorrect -

I have managed to find a simple way of determining whether a driver can tow something on a B only licence -

To tow over 750 kgs with a B licence you need to say NO to the following:-

Is the plated MAM of the trailer more than the UNLADEN/KERB/EMPTY weight of the towing vehicle?

Does the GVW of the towing vehicle plus the plated MAM of the trailer add up to more than 3500 kgs?

Is the ACTUAL weight of the empty trailer and its load more than the listed towing capacity?

One towing vehicle and trailer if you only have one horse because the trailer costs nothing when left standing

Obviously the most economical of vehicles will not make a good towing vehicle so fuel costs will be hiigher yearly but IMO not nearly as high as running two seperate vehicles

I dont have a clue what car could tow tbh.. Any ideas guys?
The majority of larger cars have a decent towing limit and are way too many to list

That 4x4 honda CRV I posted in the link on page 1 of this thread costs about £6k second hand - thats one down and hundreds to go ....

Yeah of course i understand that rog.. I agree about the trailer.. Thankyou for your help :)
Take the test then you can run a cheap old fortrack, pajero, landrover etc you are then safer both for the towing and there is no licence insurance implications of trying to dodge the rules there is no medical and it lasts a lifetime and its good to put on a CV if you want to do a job that may involve towing, groom,
farm work etc ...

If theres a safe way of doing it that doesnt mean i have to do test il do that as buying a new car/trailer is expensive enough without the added extra of test...
If its not possible then il do test. Horses safety is paramount!

Does anyone tow or know of anyone who tows with a non 4x4?
