I'm currently schooling my thoroughbred gelding . He is very lazy in the arena and very stubborn !!! How can I make him move forwards and have a lively step ?
I know its kinda a silly question but id like to get your advice :-)

Mine was like this the complete opposite of my other tbs but he hacks well in company. Is he weak Ive found since ive lunged and his muscle and topline has improved hes moving much better. If hes young like mine he will just need time.

Keep him interested. Lots of transitions, pole work, mix it up with things like walk to canter, incorporate leg yields and different shapes. Mine is an energy preserving tb too, I need to keep him interested or he just switches off and plods. Cellie's advice is good too, the fitter they get the easier they find it.

He's 13 ! but just been bought back into work after time off for other reasons . I've been lunging him aswell to help improve his muscles but maybe they just haven't improved enough ?

Just another thought .. mine planted when I first tried in school he really didnt have a clue how to go forward and I need very soft contact still .I also noticed that he objected working forward as soon as his condition changed as his saddle restricted his shoulder so he might need lots of checks if hes still a baby.Their shape changes very quickly and its easy to think lazy rather than sore.

Maybe he just needs time to build up then but keep in mind the saddle adjustment mine changed within 4 weeks :)

thanks for the advice . I tried some pole work with him but had a little difficulty getting him to trot but once he got going he was energetic

That's a very good point thank you ! I never thought of that :-) I have race exercise saddle which is flat so maybe if I tried that and then it wont be pinching or anything and see how he goes?
