I've always been wary to take my mare out (inhand, she's not rideable) because she gets excited and hard to control. But I had to take the plunge last week and lead her and my other mare to their new yard about a mile away. She was a angel following my friends gelding and she really enjoyed it :)
So I will be taking her out a bit more as its pretty much direct access to a huge country park on the new yard and quieter roads. My friend will be hacking his boy down so I can follow for a while to give my mare a bit of confidence.

I will be taking her in a headcollar and have a extra long leadrope as she rears with a bridle on and am going to put a tag on with her name/my number incase she does get loose. I've got a Hiviz exercise sheet somewhere that should fit her too.

I've worked on her manners inhand for months now, she's more relaxed now she's away from the old yard and she was perfect on Friday when we moved but I'd like to be as prepared as possible so any tips/vibes appreciated as I'm only used to taking my old pony who was an angel out but would absolutly love to get back into doing it with her as I do miss it :)

I walk my boy out in a lunge rein but also have the reins held loosely too

My insurance won't cover him if he isn't wearing a bridle when out on walks so it may be worth double checking yours

Gloves are a must as Im sure you know - and if she rears Id be wearing a hat too.

Make sure you keep your energy low, if she starts to get het up try a big sigh or a yawn. Give her a good 18 inches of rope, so you dont have a death grip on her head. Make sure you do halts and walk ons and that when you walk on she goes first, meaning you are controlling her feet not her controlling yours.

And remember to have fun!

Will double check my insurance didn't think of that! Thanks :)

Yep, wore gloves on Friday she didn't pull once but she was probably giving me a false sense of security!! :p
If you see someone walking down the road with a prancing grey welsh swearing and yawning/sighing .. You'll know it's me ;)
