Local riding school instructors on walk out hacks grab the side of the bit ring if a horse won't go a certain way or plants on the spot, the horse instantly behaves.

Sometimes they.ll even feed a lead rope through the bit on both sides.
Is this safe to do?

There.s currently an issue when i have to climb off horse to get past a field full of hay. Only on solo hacks does he plant here. Is it safe to lead him from his bit with reins? i don't want to do anything which will hurt his mouth pulling against his teeth

Yes it is perfectly safe. I presume that you lead him across the yard or wherever by the reins.
Unless he wears a martingale, take the reins over his head and hold them with one hand under his jaw and the other holding the end of the reins.
Lucky horse, that he has an owner who thinks about how what she is doing will affect him.

The lead rope through the bit is correct, or you can buy a coupling. I don't like the grabbing of the bit ring to steer or correct though. If needs be, I would hold the side of the headpiece on a cavesson to direct or correct a horse.:)

Thanks guys!

I've got a coupling too i could leave on when i ride?

If he were to spook when leading from the bit is it safe to keep hold of reins with the sideward pressure on bit?
