We seem to be having a bit of a problem leading in from the field. Hugo is very slow and 'ploddy' coming in - he doesn't step out (slightly better going back out but not brilliant). YO has suggested this is something we need to work on so I've been trying to get him to be a bit brisker - mainly by giving him a 'tickle' with the stick on his tummy. It works for about 3 seconds!!

Any ideas!??

Whilst I can appreciate YOU might want to go faster, I think you should count your lucky stars he is not one of those horses that drags you out using the leadrope as a tow rope, hoisting you through every muddy puddle going!

Could you ask Hugo to have a word with my mare, she would gladly drag me at break neck speed when being turned out or brought in (if it's raining) if she was allowed.

No suggestions I'm afraid so not particularly helpful.

Do you want Hugo to be less ploddy on leading?

To be quite honest, I am pleased that he follows me nicely now and doesn't pull or barge (like he used to) - but it is the YO's suggestion (after all, she is the one who usually brings him in). I think it is probably when they are bringing in a few at a time; he slows them up. Do you think I just shouldn't worry about it? I don't want her to have a problem with him.

I wouldnt worry tbh. My ex racer was a complete dope on a rope to bring in from the field lol you actually had to drag him in!! Even when a friend brought him in she used to compain he was to slow as the 5 min walk down the road took 10 :p
