Leading problems

Hi, Our horse is being a right pain @ the moment whilst being led & I would like some advice please !!
He comes up from the field fine - we used to have an issue with him racing up ages ago but dealt with that.
He now doesnt want to go down to the field - stops & starts all the way to the field & then grazes outside the field - when hes in the field he escapes to another field !!! (Not all the time just the odd night)
We have taken to leading him in his reins which we did for about a week & he seemed to get better so last night night we went back to head collar
half way through the gate he did an about turn & went off to graze !!

He seems to get on with the others in his field - so I am not really sure what is wrong - At the moment the mud is horrible so when he goes it is easier to let go rather than risk going flying (he doesnt go far & there are no roads about) - I am going to use bridle tonight - was thinking about a chifney - but dont want to keep having to do this - I was going to try some more groundwork with him - if anyone could suggest the sort of things we could do with him I would appreciate it as he just seems to pushing @ the moment to see how far he can go & I want to stop it before we lose our confidence with him xx

Have you tried using food in your hands when you turn out? My boy was different to yours but used to bolt off in the field and turning out with treats was the only thing that worked. He used to bolt off with a chiffney and lungeline with many other people leading him! Lead up to the field letting him smell the treats, give him one outside the gate, make sure he knows you have more then lead him through the gate, take off the headcollar then give the last of the treats (after closing the gates!) is what worked for me

We have tried treats- yesterday we had a couple of carrots & we had to use those to get him into a field - we then have to go through there to get to
our field !! We had no more carrotts his behaviour had not been good & then he just kept circling around us for more treats - which scared my daughter a little - we did get him to our field after he had calmed down a bit but I didnt want to keep doing treats as he can smell them & wants them before he gets to the field !! He has started trying to nip to get the treats which isnt good either is it !!!
