My 29 yo has leaky gut syndrome and, following vet's recommendation, has been on Protexin. This seemed to effective until the oedema re-appeared and her poos became quite loose once again. She had been fine for 12 months. Called the vet in again and he recommended I put her on Coligone - this does not appear to be working. A friend has recommended Gut Nutrition Formula, but this is very expensive and I don't want to experiment if it's not likely to have any effect!

Any thoughts on which supplement might be more effective than Coligone? or any feed you would recommend..? She looks well and is eating/drinking normally btw.

Have you tried using the Protexin Quick Fix? You might find it helps to get her back on track then you can go back to the normal protexin, i've done this in the past a couple of times

Jan Wilkinson had great success with chios mastiha and also has found that Mycosorb is helping her horse. You can ask on Phoenix horse forum - look up the Facebook page and the links are there

I'd also think about using some slippery elm and including linseed meal in his diet - both of these are mucilaginous and can protect the gut lining. Slippery Elm encourages the secretion of mucous and I find it helps two of my sensitive ones - one or two heaped tablespoons in a feed.

OP have you tried feeding the protexin at double dose long term ( cheaper than quick fix and essentially the same ) six months of this sorted out my TB .
As soon as anything stressy happens to him we get him straight back onto it .

Thanks Goldenstar, problem is this a chronic condition - she's very old and developed this 12 months ago. Vet has been involved the whole time but we've all been head scratching as to the best thing to do. She has been having Protexin (for nearly a year) in her morning feed and then Coligone (for the past month - vet's recommendation) in her evening feed. I spoke to the vet today and he said that we just have to keep trying different things, some may work, some may not. The current plan is to gradually, get her off cereal based feed....it's an emotional roller-coaster for me. However, she retains her condition and is generally comfortable with just the odd blip - I guess this is all one can hope for with a horse of this age. I love her dearly and will do all I can to help her.

Two things that I've seen work for this in oldies, aloe Vera juice (expensive) and Turmeric fed with oil and some ground pepper to increase efficacy.

Try Aloeride? My ulcery TB's insides have normalised on this, & he has put on weight despite the change from autumn to winter since I started him on it. H never used to pass wind, or poo in his stable (he's only in long enough to feed twice a day), & you could hear his gut noises from the next stable. Gut noises have subsided, he is not unnaturally un-windy & he does poo when in, which suggests to me that things are now working properly. He is also putting on weight on the same amount of food.

Aloeride does a free, no obligation trial of a couple of sachets. (I don't work for them - I've just observed the changes in my boy.)
