Learning new job

My mare has always been fun to ride but safe. We've had a year of rehab and now back riding but only in walk we are up to about 20 mins. She is good as gold to long rein and ride in school literally couldn't be better behaved. It is sadly a different matter out hacking. We've had some issues and she just isn't learning her new job and thinks she can do more. We had some issues about a month or so ago where she lost the plot with a gun going off and ended up then falling over on the driveway (we were both fine) I then walked her in hand round the little block, went with a friend and also on our own and we were ok. The trouble is she just gets excited now and any little thing sets her off now don't get me wrong its nothing major and nothing worse than she's done before so it doesn't bother me but I just don't want her hurting herself. She tends to start jig jogging and then sort of scooting about and gets quicker and quicker and although I know she won't do anything is a bit sort of unpredictable as in if say a car was to come along she won't stand to let it pass ( the road is narrow) I have to turn her towards it to let it pass otherwise she swings her bum out. Last night she got her knickers in a twist as another livery was driving along road and she got her knickers in a twist I just decided to get off and she calmed down. I know it will just take time but I feel like if I get off when she is stupid she is winning as normally I would just ride through stuff but I guess her not hurting herself is more important I'm not sure? Anyway has anyone managed to get a horse who likes being active to slow down the pace?

Neck strap to stop jagging on the reins and the power of the polo. Lots of short hacks past yard so she does not know she going home and sing your flipping heart out. Oh dear what can the matter be, me sly pony just spooked at a tree, we will be hacking from Monday to Saturday just to keep our feet in the floor. Or do e other such cheapness. Finally keep going it will take some time, reward with a tickle on the neck and ignore the bad and breathe sit deep, relaxed and keep going. It worked with my reverse to spinny, 4 feet in air teleport to next county one...... Eventually lol good luck GW x

Thank you! Would you get off to avoid her hurting herself or stay on board? We tend to go up the long driveway like a raging bull ? I am going to try doing hack back to front and bring other half up to walk along side and go past the drive like you say. She can probably do a bit longer. I think much of the issue is freshness due to leg I can't work her enough to wear her out, pre injury she was a has to be ridden six days a week mare and had to actually work otherwise was like she is now!

But you can leg yeild, quarters in quarters out, change the length on the walk, halt, walk, flex to the left, flex to the right, who said hack walking had to be boating ? X

Only allowed to walk in straight lines at moment will check with vet if a bit of that is allowed ?

You need to change your thinking, she is not winning when you dismount, you are deliberately employing a strategy to keep her safe.

Aah I am so glad you said this as I felt like this is what I'm doing and that was best way but also not sure if will make her more naughty if I do keep getting off?

Who cares..... If you dont feel safe and vehicles are passing get off ! You and the pony don't want to pick a fight with a solid lump of metal and if you come off she will prob leg it and set you both back. Fights are for fields and tracks not tarmaced roads with large vehicles x
