It really is an up and down process isn't it!
This week has been tough on me and dizzy (more dizzy) she started napping badly last week at the school gate and spinning in one direction she would also only do this on the one rein.
My gut told me this wasn't bad behaviour and there was something not right. But she was sound and everyone else said I needed to nip this in the bud now before it becomes a habit and it is obviously her testing me for the first time. So me and her had a few arguments over the gate and did some short schooling sessions but I was starting to anticipate the napping
My dressage instructor came yesterday after we hadn't seen her for nearly 3 weeks and at the beginning of the lesson dizzy started her spinning and napping I burst into tears and instructor hopped on. Dizzy tried it with her but she very gently coaxed her on and into outline, she worked her gently for 15mins and she was going beautifully my instructor then told me that she felt there wasn't something quite right with her back just behind the saddle on the left side hence why she was struggling to bend properly on that rein. She said she didn't think it was anything serious but she obviously wasn't comfortable and the napping and spinning was dizzy's way of trying to let me know! She said to get physio out (she is already booked for next week as wanted to have her done anyway before we really start working) but to continue with gentle short schooling sessions until then.
Got on her today and immediately something was not right. Was warming her up on her good rein (the one she doesn't nap on) and she kept tripping and she felt really tense. Decided to stop after 5 mins and got my YO who has a wealth of knowledge she trotted her up and felt her back and confirmed what my instructor had said, we also noticed dizzy wasn't picking up her back legs properly!
I wish I had listened to my horse earlier this week. I know she isn't naughty or bad she so sweet natured but I got so wrapped up in everyone else's opinions I was blaming her. I feel awful
So dizzy is having a week off before the physio. She is also having her teeth done and I am getting the saddler back out as well just make sure the saddle is fitting right. I also bought some arnica and lavender massage oil and gave her sore spot a lovely gentle rub tonight (not sure how much this works but she seemed to be enjoying herself dozying away) we are also going to focus on lots of groundwork and grooming and a general week of pampering
Its the first bump in our road together and the lesson learned is that I need to listen to her.
