As a self taught rider with some lessons as a child, I am now trying to learn to ride properly with regular lessons. Well I thought learning to drive a car was bad enough, but there is just so much to remember, and while I am concentrating on one part of my anatomy, something else is doing as it likes. Will I ever get there, I seem to have no coordination whatsoever. Are there any good dvd's I could watch to try and learn between lessons. The information my instructor tells me seems to stay in my head for all of 30 minutes. She is a fab instructor with the patience of a saint, and my poor horsey, who is a bit of a school mistress, seems to have a fair bit of tollerance too

Try Mary Wanless' book For the Good of the Rider, I'm in the same situation as you and this is the book my RI recommended to me.

Or Ride With Your Mind Essentials is pretty good - and easier to follow ...

Don't try and fix it all in one go!! You may find that its easier to concentrate on only just one or two things for a couple of lessons, for example if you are working on your seat then perhaps do a couple of lunge lessons, so you aren't worrying about what else is going on like steering!!! If you are on a good schoolmaster (which it sounds like you are) then they won't worry if they have to do a lesson of just transitions etc...

But most importantly don't forget to enjoy it and occaisionally don't have a lesson, go for a hack, you can still practice what you've learnt but without having to worry about getting it right.

liri_lou, i could have written that post myself! only the other day i was plodding around the school on my mare (another who is very tollerant )and wondering why i actually bothered!
i doubt ill ever be any good at it!

Ottinmeg - ditto me. I wonder how my poor horse (and instructor) put up with me sometimes. Although I have to say the advice above about concentraing on one thing at a time is good. At the moment it is my right hand which does not hold a firm contact like the left - but today I may have cracked it in my lesson - practice again tomorrow - and the day after - and the day after and so on!!

Agree with the getting someone to video you... maybe try and get someone to video your lesson so you can go over it all again and 'see' what you are feeling! Like revision i suppose.
