Has anyone done this?

My horse has retired, and the horse I've been competing for someone else is up for sale, so I will soon have no imminent need for my 3.5T horsebox... I've been debating selling it but I'm a bit emotionally attached to it, and although it's older I know where it's been, what's been fixed etc. And I'm not sure I'd manage to replace it with something that I feel as safe using when the time comes to have another competing horse.

I have a few friends without transport of their own that I think might be interested in using it, but I was wondering if anyone has done this and how they have made it work, contracts etc?

Various people have tried this over the years, there was a big article once about a woman who wanted to be a go between for horsebox owners and those who needed transport, but I don't think it worked. If you look at the terms and conditions of hiring a box from a transport business, you will see how much is demanded.

The trouble is, once you do something for payment then there are a whole lot of regulations that come into play.

I daresay that round the country there are many people who borrow a horsebox from, say a yard owner, and then return it full with fuel and with a present to the owner, but you could be letting yourself in for trouble. You always have to think the worst "what if?"

I'm not being much help! I suppose the H & H Forum is about the best place you could go for answers, or maybe your insurance broker, or even the BHS.
