I originally wanted to loan a dressage horse but I have found one which is for lease. I dont know much about leasing and i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice about it. What it entails etc. E.g does the horse go back once the lease is finishedd end of story, what if it goes wrong does it go back or will i be responsible for it, what about any vets bills??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated because i'm really confused!!!!!

Thanks!!

Isn't it just the same as a loan but you pay the horse owner for the privalidge of looking after/paying for everything the horse needs?!

Once the lease has finished I presume it would be renewed or if not then yes, the horse goes back to the owner.

You normally sort out all these things with the horse owner, but the horse would be insured so that would cover some vets bills.

I think that a year lease is something like 10% of the horses value and you treat it as your own during the period of the lease. If there is a problem then not too sure how that is dealt with - you would need to have that covered by the contract.

i'm actually looking to buy at the moment & was offered a lease horse , the price asked was between 1/3 & 1/2 of what the horse would be worth on the market for sale depending on how conservative value you placed on the horse , even based on the max i could see the horse being worth i thought it was just too much

having said that i am aware of a good name dressage rider that had a gp horse for lease at their yard earlier this year , which was either £3k or £3.5k pa(so the10% statement is probably about right in that case ) , you had to pay for livery there & lessons but in hindsight probably a good oppertunity

( the horse i mention was quite alot more money pa & not competed / trained to such a high level )

ps , if anyone has an advanced dressage schoolmaster they would like to lease out at about 10% pa of value please contact me as i would be interested , or will buy , dedicated , caring rider with weekly instruction looking to progress , age 15+ most definately welcome
