What is everybody's preference in relation to leather or synthetic girths? What do you think causes the least amount of rubbing?

I need to purchase my boy a new girth (his tummy is a bit bigger than expected!) and want a girth that will be the most comfortable.

i really rate the areborn (sp? :o) ones with elastic both ends for day to day use - plastic but soft and easily washable - have the dressage and normal ones

leather for smart use - i like stephens ones - again elastic both ends - i have normal and stud girths - and a jeffries leather dressage with elastic in the middle - i must stay i'd have rather stephens dressage girth but the jeffries was offered to me at a fabulous price ;)

I bought an anti chaff gel girth in the Royal Welsh, its worse than my standard Cottage craft girth.... my girl is washed free of sweat after every ride, girth is cleaned after every ride and its still rubbed her and she`s really sore. Shall be reverting back to my bog standard rub free girth once she`s healed :)

Will be purchasing a leather soon as they`re good for non rubbing x

I use well cared-for 3-fold leather - unpadded (no seams to rub) and unelasticated.
It only takes a trice to clean off after a ride, lasts for years and I have never had rubs. I've had one horse who hates neoprene and another who came out in sweat bumps with a synthetic - so stick to leather now.

I have the areoborne (!) synthetic stud guard for a very sensitive lady, and it comes up like new every time at a fraction of the price athough I did have a smart leather one she just couldn't handle it.............. we'd go bronking of with it. The synthetic ones are much more forgiving and very soft.

I prefer synthetic. I bought a posh shaped leather one and it gave my horse her only ever girth galls. She never got them again when I moved back to synthetic. A friend has had the same although she overcame it by adding a sheepskin girth sleeve. Leather looks nicer, but I wouldnt be buying another in a hurry

I've got a wintec/synthetic girth; my boy's been at equestrian college for the last two years and its managed to survive that unscathed! which surprised me as I'm usually no huge fan of wintec stuff.

The only thing I've found with it is that he very soon tends to sweat up underneath it, also now we're getting to the colder months he finds it very cold on his tummy when I put it on; so think will have to be getting a fleecy/neoprene sleeve for the wuss.

Emmm, anyone know of where I can get some good (hopefully leather) girth extenders? We've put on a wee bit of weight! ;) I know Libby's do synthetic ones but I'd prefer leather if honest.

I use a Flexi Girth http://www.flexiworksequine.co.uk/p16002/Flexi-Girth-Dressage-Brown/c0-527-527 I saw someone praising them on a different forum, thought I'd give it a go on my barrel of a horse and they really work. I've tried most types of girth and some non slip numnahs, but I can ride my horse in her treeless saddle, a Nuumed numnah and this girth and mount from the ground if I need to.

I really like both the Aerborn and Thorowgood synthetic girths - I think they are much nicer than the Wintec girths - and are fab for not rubbing, and also super easy to clean - either by bunging in the washing machine, or sponging off.

I thought I would treat my girl to a leather girth a couple of years ago, lovely it is - but rubs her like a buggar!

So back to my cheap & cheerful thorowgood ones :)
