Leather 'staining'. Ideas?

Hi everyone. I've just bought a cheapish bridle for day to day use and, basically, it stains. Makes my hands really dirty (black) from handling straps and buckles, so is there anything I can use to 'seal' the dye or do I just have to wait until it wears off? Thanks

I've had one that did this. Just keep cleaning it. But it will end up paler than you bought it!

Please be careful mt friend bought a cheap bridle and the cheek piece snapped causing a very nasty fall. Seems some are just like compressed cardboard

This is very supple, but mucky. As soon as I can afford to, will be upgrading

Resolene will seal it, becareful of leather dye leeching out, if it's an aniline dye it is carcinogenic, keep your hands covered as it can enter into your system through your skin.
Resolene seals it but tends to make the leather go shiny, Oz

Aniline is still used on cheaper saddlery including Indian leather, even the fumes are dodgy when using it in the workshop, bladder cancer is associated with aniline dyes.

It's a JHL bridle and I bought it at a very reputable tack store (not online). If it's so dangerous, why is it so freely available?

Petrol is dangerous if you misuse it as is bleach and alot of other substances, but they are all freely available.

Good point, but most of us understand the dangers of petrol. Never thought my bridle would be dangerous!

lol, just becareful not to get it on your hands for any length of time, ride with gloves on if you can, I have some resolene lurking in my workshop somewhere but it's old stock, should be ok still and will seal it.If you live near me you are welcome to come round and grab it, no charge, Oz

If it was a while ago you should be ok,so don't worry, here's some info on aniline in dyes

we were always warned at saddlery college never use it without gloves and mask, it's can be nasty stuff.
I think now they are coming away from aniline in the saddlery trade, years ago some of the indian saddlery I had to deal with used to leech dye out even after a small rain shower but now it's not as bad as it used to be.

I used to use aniline dyes a lot as i did a lot of leather carving etc. I presume i wore gloves but to be honest, don't remember :-O

I imagine you would have done as it's a hell of a job to get it off your hands if you don't wear gloves.
