On Sunday morning I went up to do my horse and found that two people had already gone out for an early morning ride, but one woman had left her young new dog in the boot of her car and gone out to ride her pony. I was furious as the dog was very upset and there was no one else around to keep an eye on the dog. The car in question is a Space Wagon and anything less like the word Space is the cars boot, the dog is not able to lay down its about the size of a suitcase stood upright with a small cap in front and behind not much more. The window was open in the back and it was cloudy, but as we all know the sun when it does come out is very strong and just because it was cloudy when she went out does not mean there will not be a break when the sun could come out.
When she came back I told her how upset the dog was and she said it normally alright and when her mum is in the car she is fine er well her mum was not in the car and the dog was not ok, she then told me that the dog has to learn to be left on her own, to which I said surly not in a small boot whilst you have gone for a ride. I asked her why she had to bring the dog if she knew she was going out why not leave it a home which is a three min drive from the farm, was told to mind my own business.
Today she tells me smugley she has spoken to her dog training friend and its fine to do this and that no one else does either !! Please tell me would you do this or am I just speaking out of turn as she tells me that I do not know what I am talking about because I do not have a dog. Sorry to go on but what do you think and what would you say to her.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

This is one thing that the RSPCA do take seriously... and are known for calling out the police to break into vehicles and then removing the dog back to their premises, maybe worth a call if she is not interested in her animal's welfare?

RSPCA will get police authority to smash the window. Only once that'll have to happen before the stupid cow learns her lesson - alternatively finding the dog brain dead - or dead in her car will do the job.

As pedantic says - nation of......!!!

Poor dog, you are right when the sun comes out ina car its very hot especially when stationary! She really shouldnt own that dog...couldnt she have put it in ponios stable? Thats what a few people at our place do if they call with the dog with them. But most just lave at home if planning to ride.

She'll learn unfortunately when she finds the dog dead !

I'll leave my dog while a pop in the shop or something literally 5 mins max, there's NO WAY I would leave it for any longer

i leave my terrior in the car while i go out, i dont go out often and not for very long. (20 mins) she doesnt go in the boot, she gets the run of the whole car. if its sunny i park it by the lorrys to shade it. she happily curls up and goes to sleep. sometimes shel have a yap and a bark as im leaving but she soon gets over it. i usually have to persuade her to come out of the car when i get back as shes so comfy! i dont have a problem with it provided it is comfortable and not in direct sunlight and not for very long.

eta- if its very hot she doesnt come down at all. she gets walked in the eve when its cool. a livery has a great big boxer dog who goes in the stable when she rides. hes abit big to sit in the car for that long.

Yes! This is an illegal act.....I'd have rung either the police or the RSPCA

this is an excerpt from the RSPCA website...

In warm sunny weather cars become ovens, with temperatures soaring to 120°F/49°C or even higher. Because of this, the RSPCA advises that animals are never left inside cars.

If an animal left in a car is panting for breath it may be starting to suffer from heatstroke, which can kill an animal very quickly.

Leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help.

Owners who put an animal at risk by leaving it inside a locked car could face prosecution.

Please help us get this message across this summer. It will save more dogs from suffering and avoid the need for us to prosecute owners.
Dogs can die from heatstroke in a minimum of 20 minutes. If you see a dog left inside a parked car on a warm day, please contact the Police on 999 for assistance. In the event of the police being unable to attend, please contact our 24-hour Cruelty and Advice telephone line 0300 1234 999.

I have left my 2 dogs in the back of the car for maybe 30 mins but I popped back to check on them and they had oodles of space and all the windows open and the car was parked in the shade. Neither of them get stressed though, i'd worry about a stressed dog left in a car for any length of time.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do aside from calling the RSPCA if and when necessary but well done for speaking up to her. :)

the temperature has to be over a certain amount for them to remove the dog from the car. just make a comprimise and say pop it in the stable with a dog bed while your out. But tbh, some wooden stables on very warm days can become just as hot if not hotter than a car in the shade. the dog should be left at home if its a very hot day and you ride. i hate riding in high tempertures so it rarely have that situation

Having seen a dog suffer from heatstroke on a walk - I am only too aware of the dangers of letting a dog get too warm. I just wouldn't risk it myself. My dogs are the most precious things in the world to me and to leave them get too hot, just to convenience myself would be the height of selfishness for me. IMO ;)

ditto about the rspca thing....

id rather buy my dog a crate and put it in my stable if i went riding (if i had to bring the dog down)

however ive banned my dog from the yard as its just not fair to lock them up when i go ride :(

I have a large boot - bought the car especially for my dog!! She has plenty of space, it is quite cool in there as it has darkened windows and if for some reason she has to be in there for a short period windows are all open.

I take her to work with me daily and I always drop her home before I go up the yard. If there is an emergency then I might need to rush to yard and grab one of my lads in - 5 mins max, but she would be in the shade with windows open and minimal time in the car. I cannot stand people that go off on hacks and just leave them - I used to be friends with a girl that used to do that with her kid too!!!! Some people just shouldn't have animals or kids!!!

It also has to be a certain type of car aswell... we have someone who keeps there small terrier in the boot some days and because its a hatch back they SSPCA won't do anything.

I tried to ring the RSPCA but all answer machines. The owner is an old farmer who will not ever get involved and she spoke to him and he did not hear the dog, so you do not get any support from him. Phoned the dogs trust today and they were not happy and are sending me some information regarding this. This is a fifty year old woman who acts like a child most of the time and there are not that many of us at the farm and most of them never say anything to her because she kicks off big time she is a very small lady height wise and people seem to let her get away with things because of her height and they do not want to upset her now just been told she will have to leave and put the pony to sleep !!!!! OMG again I wish she would go, when ever she does not get her own way she says this but never Bxxxxy does, thought this could not get any worse so now some how I am the bad person grrr

just report her, there is nothing more you can do. If she decides to pts her pony because of this, then I'm afraid there is nothing you can do. She wont and sounds like an attention seeking old trollop!! However I would definitely keep reporting and making notes on the days and times that the dog is left in there and pics and pics of the temperature in your car. Good luck!!

I have never brought my dog up to the yard when I'm riding.

Some people at ours leave their dogs in their stable when they ride, but they always bark and it's very irritating for everyone else, so I wouldn't recommend you suggest that either!

I leave mine int he tack room which is nice and cool while I ride, or tied in a stable with water accessible (he can jump over the door if not tied) and he is quite happy. I left previous dog in the car on a very cool day years ago (1st dog, a rescue, neither of us had a clue how to be dog and owner!) literally while I chucked Lottie at the field, I was gone for 3 mins max.

He ate:
1x seatbelt
1x entire back seat
1x window handle
1x rubber door seal
1x half passenger seat
2x car mats
Then he threw up on remainder of car.

I was not too impressed but grateful he didn't eat drivers seat belt or steering wheel so I could get us home. Never did that again!

When I go out riding I shut my dog in my (mucked out!) stable. It's cool and he has his water bowl and a toy - he's perfectly happy and never makes a sound. I'd never leave him shut in the boot for that length of time that would be cruel. I feel bad when I stop at Tesco for a pint of milk on the way home from work and leave him for 10 minutes! Not good.

i had a friend who gave up being a vet because she couldn't cope with stupid p[eople such as this woman. The last straw for her was treating, without success, a dog dying from heatstroke after being left in a car.

No excuse to leave a dog in a hot car, if it's hot and I need to go out she stays in the house. If I ride she normally comes too, again, unless it is hot, and when she is working I encourage her to swim in the loch or streams to keep her cool. In fact that's how I excercied my 9 the other day, needed to go out, too hot for a walk, hence large cooling swim for all.

Next time she does it just phone the RSPCA, no messing around do it. Do you really honestly care if this woman kicks off at you? She's not a friend she's just someone who keeps their horse at the same place as you, so you owe her nothing but the dog sure will be grateful for your phone call. Please do it no animal deserves to suffer like that.

I let a dog out of a car (door was unlocked..window was not open!!!) just yesterday that was left while the owner was showing her horse, I popped one of my dogs slip leads on it and walked it to the ring and shouted loudly 'whos dog is this?' It was panting and very very distressed, and I really couldn't care less who she was I wanted her to know what she had done, embarrassed doesn't cover what she was but I would rather she remembers that humiliation for the rest of her life than risk the dogs life again.

Stupid selfish idiotic people. Its really quiet simple, leave fido at home if you have no safe cool place to leave him...my dogs go in my stable while I ride they have bed, water and it's cool so they enjoy it.

maybe suggest she pops it in the tack room with a notice up to warn other liveries so they don't let it out! This is what we do as putting your dog in a stable with a footpath running through is asking for it to be stolen, especially a nice little jack russle!

I don't leave mine in the car when riding but I will leave them in to go to the shop etc. Not when it's sunny but don't see the big deal if it's not sunny?

As others have said
- YO (get them to put a sign up saying no dogs/dogs must be in stable/kennel)
- RSPCA
in the other order if you see dog in car on a remotely sunny day.

We all remember those two police dogs from last year.
