Want to leave current yard.Feel bad as actually I like yard owner quite a lot but it is not a yard that suits me as I need more help than they have the time to give.A few years ago I would have been fine there. Its not a conventional yard but a dealership with a few liveries.I can move to the yard where my old boy is on retirement livery.
It also runs a full livery service and has excellent facilities including an indoor.I am getting old and need this now.The staff I have met over the last couple of years strike me as very competent and also friendly. My old boy is very well looked after.
I just feel so bad though and find it quite stressful.Must be old age I think.Support needed.

If you get on with the current YO then try not to worry. It sounds like a professional sort of set up and I'm sure they've had the same thoughts as you, and will totally get why you're leaving.

I moved yards last May, for decent hacking mainly. When I explained to the YO she was lovely, completely understood, and the next time she saw my current YO told her she was very happy for me. Previous YO's husband cried when he heard I was leaving 🤣

Well console yourself you are not at our yard!! A few of us have just given notice at ours due to lots of issues with the management of the place and general cluelessness of the owners. They have been disinterested for months and we are clearly too much effort for them (full livery yard)… they keep imposing stupid rules, the most frustrating is no entry until 10am! Fencing is also dire and our horses keep getting injured on them and losing shoes (mine lost 5 in the last 3 months, all of them have been on the poorly maintained wire fence!).

Anyway we gave notice and it’s been a nightmare since, they have been harassing us since, trying to get people to change their minds by making excuses for their poor management and basically ambushing people on their own. It’s horrible and I cannot wait to go! They have successfully bullied one person into staying…offering incentives such as extra bedding (we currently get about 2 inches on a good day) it’s pathetic. We now go up in pairs so we are not alone with them…it’s awful. My daughter is getting super wound up by the environment now and we are counting down the days! Going a week early as I can’t stand it!

I swear yards should have some sort of minimum standard because the stress they can cause by poor management is unbelievable!!!

Gosh, that's so weird!
If they are worried about losing clients you'd think they'd be super-nice to anyone leaving, then you'd be more likely to recommend them to anyone else who was looking
Also it's generally better to be a decent human than a d!ck

Yup! I get they are worried about lost income but they are not exactly recommending themselves for future!! Obviously they are playing at running a yard, be amazed if they bother running it in the near future

It really is up to horse owners to decide what are the minimum standards they will accept for their animals. If the yard doesn't meet those standards, find another. The message will get through eventually.

I don’t understand why people feel they have to stay for the notice period? Surely if things are so bad you could just move either pay your notice up front or after you’d taken your horse away?

I assume some people can’t afford to pay double livery for the overlap between old yard notice period and new yard arrival date.
Also new yard might not have space early.

The thread starter and the second contributor are in full livery and to do that you have to find around £600, or more, you can afford to just throw away. Not everyone has it.

It's a bit sad that the YO in this case hasn't done anything wrong or reacted in any way at all, yet people are making assumptions. As I said waaay upthread, they are probably well aware that the OP's requirements have changed and won't be one bit surprised they want something different.

Yes on a personal level I have to stress that I have no quarrel at all with the YO or her yard.It is just not suitable for me,that is all. When I was younger I would have been perfectly happy there.
