Hi All, a query for those with horses (or who spend a lot of time out of the house)... to cut a long story short we have had to move my horse onto a yard where dogs aren't allowed. Our dog used to be with us every second we were down the yard, and now he won't be able to come we are worried and think we may have made the wrong decision... for those who don't have the option of bringing your dogs with you anywhere for a couple of hours how do you get on? Not sure if I'm just being a baby but he is only 3 and don't want him upset and / or destroying the house while we are away 3 hours max. Sorry for the long rant 🙄🐴

*i have also posted this is the dog forum but wondered if this forum would get any good answers too :)

I have never taken mine to the yard , they get a good walk then sleep for about 4/5hrs. If we go out all day I get someone to let them out. I think they are much safer away from the horses, my opinion as I know lots do take them to events and yards.

So has your dog never been left at all? Does he normally get upset when you go out? All my dogs have been accustomed gradually to being left alone. My current dog is nearly two and can quite happily be left for extended periods of time if necessary. If you have never left your dog then I would start to leaving him for short periods of time and see how you get on. Give him something to occupy him like a stuffed Kong or similar.

B will sleep on the bed or sofa quite happily whilst partner and I are at the yard together (which isn't normally for long). Partner used to take him to work but now he's not working only doing bits and bobs here and there he keeps him at his brothers house in the day which is easier to get to and pops back at lunch time, so only four hours away each time although he will happily go for up to six hours providing he goes out for a wee before we go and gets a walk prior.

One solution is to your dog a dog flap in the kitchen door (if it leads directly outside to the garden) and that way your dog will be able to go out at will and this will eliviate the need for you to let him out for a wee. Also if you leave a radio on or the TV it will be a form of company for him.
