Just wanted a moan really, isn't closing all gates one of the most basic rules of the countryside?

Why can't people manage to shut them?!!?!

One of our liveries on Friday, left the gate to the road open, the gate to the first field open, the gate to the second field open (thats 3 gates in a row) and in the second field was a pony which they knew could get under the electric fencing so worse case scenario that pony could have got out on the road because they left every gate open!

They also left the gate from the second field to their own field open and then suggested i had put the pony in there, when actually if gates are left open ponies tend to go where they want!

I went to shut two of the gates, only for them to be left open again 10mins later.

Very exasperating!!

Oh it is isn't it! I am always walking around shutting gates! Its habit now, although people should do it automatically. I guess on busy yards by the time you have walked across and opened all the gates to get to a horse, its taken you an extra 5 mins than if the gates were already open!!

Hoe-Hum!

We've started padlocking gates due to the amount of livestock that has been on the road of late. I'm not sure its allowed, but the way I see it- our gates, our land, our livelihood, being saved from stupid people.

i have been on a yard where we had a big problem with this, ended up with the rule that two strikes and your out, as in you get caught twice leaving gates open then you are asked to leave...............only happend once and when the livery had left the gates stayed shut

This is the sign I put on our yard gate, it's in red and black with a horse symbol under the private part on A4 laminated paper.

PRIVATE

AUTHORISED ACCESS ONLY,

THOSE “INTELLIGENTLY CHALLENGED” ( AHH BLESS) LEAVE THE GATE OPEN FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO CLOSE AS USUAL,
EVERYONE ELSE PLEASE CLOSE IT
THANKS
ANYONE NOT COMPLYING WILL HAVE THEIR NUTS CUT OFF

Haha I would not want to be a forgetful gate numpty at your yard!

It is sooo infuriating when people do that though. I get annoyed enough when the builders leave our garden gate open after they've left, let alone a gate to a field with animals in it! Some people really are thick aren't they? Or worse, just think they're above the rules.

I don't normally comment on things like this, but seeing as your username is "pedantic"

it should be "intellectually challenged"

Glad it's not only me! I have to stop myself from correcting people's grammar and spelling -it's my OCD thing!

My pet hate is "would/should/must of". It's "would/should/must HAVE." I know it sounds like "should of" but that's just way it's said i.e "should've". Sorry rant over!

Thing is, it aint people's intelect that makes them leave gates open, it's cant be arsedness and lack of intelligence, hence, "intelligently" challenged

, I aint an intellectual person at all, but I knows hows to close a gate marm, it be so easy, yous just swings it back the way it was before, tug forelock bow scrape grovel.............

I have one livery who constantly leaves the main gate open. I have asked, I have signs on the gates, I have balled her out lots of times so last time she did it I padlocked the gate shut and put a note on it saying from now on this gate will be padlocked shut and all liveries except her would be entrusted with a key. She however would have to arrange with me to have the gate opened so I could then padlock it shut behind her - at a charge of £5 a time. So far she hasn't left a gate open again. give it till the end of July and teh padlocks come off

Can you fit some self closing latches? I know it will cost but maybe you could recouperate some of the money from the liveries. After all, it is them (or one of) that is leaving them open!

Or maybe hide this persons horse, leave the gates open and say it must have escaped when she left the gate open. Might shock her enough to make her think.

Well i got the blame for the little pony escaping into their field!! I said i didn't put him in there, he ducks under the electric fence and obviously went through the open gate.

Drives me mad especially when i went round shutting them only for them to be left open again 10mins later
