Leeches being used on horses?

I was having a discussion with a friend of mine the other day about leeches being used on horses and it got me thinking. Apparently they are good for laminitis and hematomas. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience using leeches or any info etc, it's just something that intrigued me...

Used in human medicine so see no reason they couldn't be used in human medicine. THEIR spit for want of a better word, is an anticoagulant and therefore can keep blood flowing better...
