I'm really struggling with Mare on left leg canter - she is fine on the lunge (now - wasnt before) but in riding she gathers and over bends and generally looks p*ssed off. All checks have been made - back shoulder saddle etc

What would people suggest to get and improve left leg canter

(have tried raised pole but she interprets this "slightly raised" pole into a 3f spread....aahhh youngsters)

Hiya,
My mare was like this in her right canter for a while, really green and behind the bit and jumping around. After all the checks came up fine, I did lots of lunge work too and then in ridden work I've been trying to do lots of canter out hacking in long straight lines. In the school I generally just canter her large around the school and keep her going, and she seems to settle the longer we canter and starts to relax forwards. It does seem to be working and her canter is becoming more balanced, but my girl isn't young, just green, so she is strong enough to handle longer canters.
Good luck with yours, I'm not sure if that's helpful, mostly just wanted to say that I had the same problem and we're getting through it slowly but surely!
:)

Thanks for that! her right leg canter is fantastic! just wish i could get the sam on the left! cant even get her to strike off on it

See if you can get someone videoing you asking for canter on both reins. I tend to drop my outside hand slightly when I ask for left canter and tip forward slightly - both movements are minimal and don't affect the more established horses but are picked up by the babies. When I consciously try not to do it I get the correct strike off. Sensitive youngsters tend to do exactly what they think we are saying and can't filter out the bits we don't want them to feel.
