left over hay...what do you do with yours?

My horse gets adlib hay on the floor as haynets worry me (seen too many horses get legs or rugs stuck in them!) but when she used to have two big haynets she would always leave about half of one. She comes across as a very greedy, will eat anything type of horse but no matter what I tried she would not eat that half a haynet she had left! I'd put it on the floor and she would leave it, put it in another haynet (either on top, bottom or mixed in) she would leave the whole haynet! She wouldn't even eat it if I put it in the field with barely any grass so I used to just chuck it, even though it pained me to do so!

I have forgotten what left over hay looks like, as it gone by the morning.

But if there has been leftovers I either chuck it in the field at this time of year, or stick it back in the net and top up.

Anything still edible goes in with his fresh hay :) My chap has a manger, so bits do tend to get dropped on the floor. Not that he leaves much, tbh!

As a general rule never have any left but if it is I top up. If theres a lot of hay left every morning I decrease the amount given in net.Don't mind the odd day some left.
Seen a lot of waste with folk filling up huge haynets everyday ,horse doesn't finish it so its chucked and they fill up haynet as full again and do same next day.

Realize this isn't helpful at all - but I never have this problem ;). GreyDonkey will happily hoover up whatever I give him - unless he just plain doesn't like it . . .

I've got two horses who know what they have left from the night before and won't eat it the following night. However... if I just switch their hay tubs each day so they get each others left overs that is fine as it is new to them!

I have never understood people who chuck left over (dry or untouched or unspoiled) hay. It's exactly the same age as the ''new'' hay they put in the net the next day. Sigh.

If they have any left over I mix it with the 'new' hay the next day.

Could you please come and explain this to my horses? 2 of the 3 won't eat what lands on the floor - I refill the haynets so they look all full and fresh (but with the stuff from the floor) and the baby horse (who is not shut in, just has her stable as a shelter) has not touched it for 2 nights! It's now a case of 'who's going to look away first' (or 'who's going to give in and eat / take down the haynet'!!) - I'm being strong so far as she's well covered enough to cope without the haynet - but don't know how long I will manage before I break and feel sorry for her! ;)

(p.s. I know I'm soft!)

I used to put my greedy pig horse in fussy horses stables for 20 mins each in the morning before mucking out to tidy any left overs - I think it was his best part of the day TBH licking everyone elses plates!!
