leftover hay

Used to depend on if she had wee'd on it or not! If no wee or other yuck then I'd keep it (hay), if it was uck it would go out. Haylage wasn't fed very often, but when it was, so long as not wee'd on etc., then I'd give it a good sniff - decent stuff stayed.

my lad is on haylage..and believe it or not dosnt matter how much i feed,he leaves the exact same amount every morning, lol(he must be saving incase 1 morning he goes out late, lol),i usually put it in with 1 of the poor doers and give him fresh!!
However leftover hay from all the stabled horses goes out in the field for the ponies that live out!

It's good for chucking in the chicken house too. My 2 get the vapours if you stuff dropped haylage back into the nets. I'm sure Sunny deliberately poos on his so it has to get thrown out. The answer is to adjust the number/size of the nets so nothing gets wasted but that's sometimes easier said than done!

If there's any leftover haylage, providing its not got bedding or dung in it, I give a small amount to the dartmoor/shetland on the yard. Owner approves. He enjoys it. Otherwise it gets burnt on the muck heap and recycled by being turned into potash and carted off by a local farmer.

My big herd are actually bedded on hay as its cheaper than straw. Any leftovers get pulled back into the bed.

I would never throw uneaten hay away, its like setting fire to money!!!
