Morning all!
1st of all may i say this is not a dig at anyone who uses them at all in the slightest way possible! its just me being a numpty, i was just wondering why they are used as i was thinking of getting the ponio some, and also are they easy to put on?
Thank you, have a good day:)

Without having a dig at you:) if you dont know why they are used or how to put them on does you pony need them at all.

In answer though, bandages are usually used for exercise as protection, in the stable for warmth and to help the circulation so stopping legs from swelling.
Wraps are used in the stable as above they can also be put on wet or muddy legs to help dry them and prevent mudfever.

Wraps are easy to put on, they wrap round the leg and fasten with velcro, bandages if you want to use them it would be a good idea to get someone experienced to show you as they can, if put on badly, do damage to the tendons.

Hope that helps a bit.:D .

Thank you!
I will def get someone to help me!
Will wait more till summer when we start some hardcore schooling and trying to get canter in the arena(which from my mare in seemingly impossible!):rolleyes:
I know a tack shop just down the road from me which helps with all that kind of stuff, thats where my mums friend learned how to do bandages, a visit there will be in order.
Thank you!
Roll on summer!:D
also would leg wraps (as they seem easier!) still protect her legs when exercising?

I would just get a good set of exercise boots, that is what most people use when riding.

That's just what I was thinking. I can't be doing faffing around with bandages. I use 'stretch and flex' boots for schooling, Eskadron tendon boots for show jumping and New maximum performance for hacking and cross country.

Thank you, sounds like a good idea and an easier option!
I'm right in thinking i would buy just a set for her front legs?
Does anyone have any recommendations!? or reputable places online to buy from? (cheap and cheerful will do the trick:D)

I boot all four legs on some horses. It depends on their action and what you will be doing with them. Boot all 4 legs if you are wanting the boots for warmth and support. Boot only the legs that are effected if your pony brushes.

Get them on ebay or any of the online equestrian stores.

Buy woof two strap brushing boots, they are easy to put on and look rather smart.
Ask your farrier if you need hind boots, to be honest you might be better to get a few lessons and ask these questions of an instructor who is better placed to advise.

No shes not shes a fat bay welshie:D who i love lots!, but if its who were both thinking off they share the same name!...as when i got my mare many people thought that i had got the mare i *think* were both talking about!
^sorry bit confusing, Pm'ing you will be easier!

Talking to the farrier sounds like a good idea too, thank you:)

From personal experience Welshie's tend to not need boots for general riding as their legs move more outwardly rather than brush. My vet has advised against booting my horse in almost all circumstances apart from going cross country. He is a straight moving Connie but has had PSD problems and so the advice against booting up is to prevent over heating of his legs.
I work professionally with horses and regularly had to put 4 bandages for riding/exercise on atleast 5+ horses a day so am pretty good at bandaging. However IMO most leisure riders cause more harm than good by over booting/bandaging.

I don't use boots to exercise my mare she doesnt need them - she does however wear leg wraps at night now to stop her legs from filling and keep her creaky old joints warm

have you ever noticed any Knocks or marks on your horses legs that suggest she has brushed one leg with the other during ridden work ?

Good idea about farrier and/or instructor. If your is still quite green (soudns like it from the canter in school comment) then hopefully you won't be doing too much that challenges her physically so she may not need any.

You can get lots of other nice colourful things for her if you just feel like treating her though!

I agree with the first comment, dont go buying them if you dont NEED them (and if you dont know what they're for, you dont need them!).

I personally have never used bandages (except tail ones). Well I think I did very early on when I first got into horses purely because you didnt get travel boots as often back then, it was gamgee and bandaging to travel. But I've never used them since or any horses I've had. Dont understand why they're used in the stable for warmth - as far as I'm concerned its far better for the legs to be cold than too warm. To dry off legs - you can also buy proper boots for that nowadays (like Stable Chaps) which are far easier and quicker to put on.
