Leg/hoof handling

Hi I’m just after a bit of advice...after having a bad experience with a friends horse,I’m nervous handling back legs/hooves, (the fronts I’m fine with) how can I overcome this,many thanks.

Maybe just start to do it gradually. Rub the leg for a second then take your hand away and build it up to where you are comfortable grooming the back legs then pick up the hooves and put them down straight away. Keep at it until you are comfortable holding up a hoof. Train yourself as you would train a horse to get used to having his legs/ hooves handled.

It sounds wrong but make sure you are as close to the horse as possible and in front of the leg you want to pick up. The closer you are the less likely you are to get kicked.


Stand facing the wall behind the horse, tucked into the horse's side, like the farrier does, also practice onn a horse with smooth steady movements, rather than one which will pick it's feet up quickly
