my horse came in from the field with a tiny swelling to the back and very bottom of the leg. when i checked him the next day the vein that runs along the tendon bone had inflamed and he wasnt weight baring on it. if he tries to walk it is a struggle for him. i thought it may be a tendon injury but am not too sure now as at the bottom of his hoof there is a small indent like he has trod on a stone and that is the leg he is lame on. i dont really want to call the vet yet so i am going to give him a few days on beaut to see if he is just only lame. he will be on rest too in an isolated feild as he wont run around but still can exercise because i dont want it cease if he is on boxrest. what do you think it could be or what would you reccomend?

Havnt read your other posts, but this could be a tendon sheath infection, in which case you have approx 8 hours (from the injury) to get horse to horsepital for a GA and the sheath flushed.

It may well be something else altogether, but having lost one horse with this and more recently had a mare on the yard with a puncture wound, we got her to horsepital just in time. I really wouldnt want to risk it. None weight bearing lameness is an absolute emergency.

Please let us know how you get on.

ETS - This could also be something as simple as an abcess but I wouldnt want to take any chances. I would also box rest, however I'm not a vet and you should seek advice from a professional.

I can't believe how you don't consider it an emergency situation and call your vet when your horse is non weight bearing. Tell me now, if you couldn't put your foot to the floor because it was so painful would you not go immediately to the hospital? I think you would. At the risk of getting slaughtered by the other users on this forum if you are worried about cost implications and really are as ignorant as you sound you really shouldn't have a horse in the first place.

I am sorry but i do agree not weight baring is an emergency and you need to call the vet posting on the forum to people who cant see the horse isn’t going to help. Sorry to be harsh but it could be so many serious things that you need to call the vet.

Why don’t you want to call the vet??? What is your reasoning?
