My horse has had intermittent swelling in and around his tendon area, particularly on the near fore. The vet has looked at it twice and can't find anything wrong but he has now started to be lame on it. Can anyone suggest anything or give me any tips as to how to look after and strengthen tendons. Do you think he should always be ridden in boots/bandages and what about road work to strenthen them? Confused!

Thanks

Lian

DEFINITELY get a scan asap. I've had this in the past with a well known vet who told me on more than one occasion that the leg was fine and to carry on riding until I p*ssed him off so much he scanned it, and what do you know?!? Needless to say never used him again.

Until you get scan results, back off work where possible and I wouldn't use bandages etc as this can mask the problem and any subtle changes you notice.

Most importantly remember it's your horse and you know it's legs, what they look like normally and any changes in them the best.

Good luck!

I agree, get a scan cos horses not always lame initially when they've damaged a tendon. I would also cold hose if you can in case it is damaged. If you think it might be a tendon injury then I would keep him in until the scan if you can, if not I would at the very least hold off riding him, and don't bandage as the heat makes the inflammation worse and so causes more damage.

If it is the tendon, even if-fingers crossed- its just a niggle, I recommend Tendoneaze by global herbs- my old mare went from "field ornament/ broodmare" prognosis to "get back on board" 8 weeks later. May have been complete coincidence but my vet was amazed at the repair in that time......
