I was trying this last night with new horse, and doing what I thought was right, however, instead of keeping his body straight, he turned it towards the direction we were going, although it felt like he was still moving properly.

Any suggestions?

it sounds like he was falling through his shoulders - his shoulders met the track before his quarters?
Leg yield and as soon as he feels like his shoulders are taking over, ride straight then leg yield again and continue over and over until he no longers falls through his shoulders

yes that sounds like what he is doing .... thanks for that, I will try tonight, and hope that we can sort it out!!!

You need to support the outside of the horse by keeping hold of your outside rein and using outside leg to support as well. Make sure you have some flexion in the opposite direction of travel through the horse's neck but not TOO MUCH, or he will fall out through the shoulder. Try doing 1 stride leg yield, one stride straight, one leg yield and so on as Gabby says.
