I keep my horse on a DIY livery yard. I don't have a contract (yards in area won't provide them). The rent is the highest in the area for DIY yards. The yard has a number of issues which myself and other owners feel need addressing: Leaking around electric points and lights, the fields are fenced with barbed wire and are poorly maintained, etc.
As well as the above, where do horse owners stand on being harrassed and having their items damaged or taken without consent? While on the yard.
I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me where I and many like me stand on this?

Not sure about the legal side, but if I'm not happy with a DIY yard, I move to somewhere better. I've only ever had one contract at a yard, it isn't something that has been an issue.
 
As you don't have a contract (I've never had one, they aren't common around my area either), all you can do is talk to the owner and ask for the required jobs/maintenance to be done. If you really love the yard and are planning to stay for a long time you could offer to chip in for fencing costs etc if you feel the need, other than that if it doesn't suit you you'd be better off moving to somewhere that did suit you.

As far as items being taken/broken and harassment you have the same rights as you have for these issues anywhere, either lock your stuff away, or if you feel strongly enough about it contact a solicitor or the police.

leave unless you and the other liveries can form a united front and have a chat with your yard owner about field maintenance of if you are all planning on staying there for a while club together and get some electric fencing and pay for a outside farmer to come and maintain your fields for you.

As for your stuff being taken without consent I would get a box with a padlock, if its your tack I would go mad and be moving if its your wheelbarrows etc i would just plaster your name all over it and say that you don't mind people using it when your not there but please could they return it!
