Leicestershire - Looking to get experience with horses

I have recently started learning to ride and I am really enjoying it, but would also like to learn more about horses and caring for them. I am aware of the courses that are available at Melton college near by, and also that I can get pony care lessons at riding schools but those things don't come cheap.

Can anyone suggest a way for me to get more experience? I work 5 days a week but would love to try and do this around my job. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a horse, otherwise I would be offering my services and being a complete novice I would need to learn everything!

Thanks.

Volunteer to help at a riding school/riding for the disabled centre.

I think a lot of places may be reluctant to take a complete novice on due to the risk and insurance costs etc, but if you ask around you're bound to find somewhere who would be grateful of a willing helper.

Good luck.

I have offered my help to RS's - explaining my complete lack of knowledge but willingness to learn quickly - yet they all seem to have an abundance of volunteers. One of them was a riding for the disabled school which did take my details and gave me an induction, but they said they would "contact me if they needed me" which didn't sound too positive and I have yet to hear from them 3 weeks later.

It's slightly discouraging for me being as desperate as I am to learn. My riding school have offered lessons in pony care but I am already paying quite a lot a week for riding lessons alone.

If there is anyone based in leicestershire that needs a hand caring for their horse and can help teach me, I would gladly offer my time during weekdays/weekends or over holiday periods.
