does anyone have any tips?

I can't seem to manage it - he goes faster, so then I rise faster and it turns into a disaster!!!

i want to be able to get a medium trot to do prelim dressage...

thanks!

firstly you dont have to do medium trot in prelim.

secondly you need to make sure your horse is working through from behind and into a soft contact. If your horse isnt soft and 'on the bit' then you are doomed from the start!

id do lots of transitions with in and up and down the paces to get the hind leg active. Do the medim around the arena, and not across the diagonal to start with. Move your legs slightly forwards, push down in your stirrups and rise higher, but not faster, whilst useing a stronger leg aid, into a soft hand - but dont allowe the horse to run on.

Thats right you don't need to show any medium trot until novice and then the tests will say show some strides of medium trot as opposed to having to do a whole long side of them.
One exercise I find helpful is to ride a 10m half circle on the short end of the school and incline back to the track asking for the medium on the diagonal back. The 10 metre half circle helps to get the horse engaged before asking for the medium. This really helped me a lot.
Also find if helps to imagine riding uphill if thats any use to you.
Good Luck.
