Official Statement From Lennox's Family:

We apologise for the silence as we know our many friends and supporters around the world have been desperate for news but until we had further talks with our legal team we had nothing new to share. We needed to explore all possible options before we issued another statement as we did not wish to give those that have campaigned so... tirelessly any false hope or for anything to be taken out of context as has happened in the past.

Whilst there may well be errors in the Judge’s ruling from a point of law this has little bearing on whether we can or should progress by taking the case to a higher court. The ruling is based on the Judge’s decision that he deems Lennox to be unsafe despite evidence given by those qualified to assess and understand dog behaviour that contradicts the testimony of the Prosecution that was presented in court. This has given us little room for manoeuvre.

Our concern and priority has always been the welfare of our beloved boy. We have fought to have Len returned to our family from the moment he was seized but we have been advised that the legal fight is at an end. We are obviously distraught but have to consider the impact that any future lengthy legal battle would have on Len if we chose to go against the advice that we have been given. We cannot subject him to any more as there are no grounds for a further appeal and we do not wish to prolong his suffering any longer by engaging in a battle that we simply cannot win.

We have attempted to write this statement many, many times but have struggled to put in writing that the fight to spare Lennox’s life may well be over. It has been almost impossible for us to accept that we have to admit defeat. We always believed that there was some hope and that justice would prevail. We were wrong. There have been many dark days for us since Len was taken and we want you all to know that it is your support and kindness that kept us going through the blackest times.

This is all we can share with you at the moment and we are finding it hard to come to terms with the fact that there is nothing more that we can do from a legal point of view and that Lennox may well be killed. We have one last hope that Belfast City Council will allow Lennox to be rehomed in the USA. The offer is there but we have no say in whether this offer will be accepted. We have never refused to rehome Lennox. That decision was taken out of our hands from the moment Len took his final walk with us from our house to the Dog Wardens van.
If the offer is turned down we will fight for our right to say goodbye. We cannot bear the thought that Lennox will die without being reminded of the hearts and hands that love him.

^^^ nor can i understand why anyone would put the dog through more trauma?

very sad but if it were my dog i would have ended his suffering earlier...being away from family and locked away for 2 years. :(

Would you though? Don't think I would, think I'd be fighting too. Can't imagine how it must feel to have your 'innocent' dog just taken away because it is suspected he is a banned/dangerous breed of dog. This case has just appalled me not just because it's take so long but because there seems to be no actual thought to the welfare of the dog in the process.

Part of me prays he is allowed to go to Cesar in California and probably become a role model for his breed. At least that guy does understand the breed and does really care.

I hope they allow his family to be with him in his final moments, its just unbelievable it has come to this, his litter mate has been passed as not of type. Why they wont allow DNA testing of Lennox is beyond me, it is used by so many reputable bodies yet for BCC they wont consider it.

DNA testing has been proven unreliable unless used to match parentage.
I think the error made was licensing him as a bulldog (American) when he clearly isn't and Am bull has been one of the terms used to sell pit puppies.

Surely as there is now a DNA test to discover a human`s roots, there must be a way with dogs..in fact I think there is. Call him whatever they choose..just ship him out to California.

Ek at this stage exporting him is not legally possible AFAIK.

Both my dogs are DNA tested but again AFAIK it is to prove that X is the dog that it says X is on the pedigree/registration certificate and which tallies to X's health test results, his mother is A and his father is B (providing A and B were also DNA tested and held with the same registry).

I thought about this re letting him suffer for so long.

I think if it was me I'd fight all the way to get my dog back. I'd want to know I had done everything in my power. It would be very hard just to accept the decision and walk away.

Gulp :(

I agree that if it were one of mine, (easy to say I know) I don't think I could bear to leave them this long and maybe would have made the decision to PTS before now.

However, it's incredibly sad and my heart goes out to Lennox.

DG, it maybe that because the sister has never been brought to the attention of the authorities for any reasons (like lennox has) and indeed he is registered as "x" (american bulldog) (Whatever breed) I cannot remember what it said it this post:p which is raising suspision this is what has condemmned him, he looks like a brute from what I have seen but other than that I know little about it to be honest.
I can say when LL on here had her 2 bitches taken the reason there was no suspision re the dog (buster) that Jadey rehomed to LL is because his vax card had staffordshire bull terrier clearly written on the breed description, so therefor proof enough (for the authority at that end) that a form of documentation (vax card) had his breed on it. (although he was a very badly bred one):p and looked like a x breed I have to say, but as a pup he would have been reged as a staffy.
Hope that made sense.:o

From what I remember, a brother of Lennox had died of cancer.
Caroline Barnes said back in the early days of the case they had tried to trace the breeder/went to the house he was bought from but they had moved address.

Thanks Cayla/CC and I do know what you mean Cayla, Im sure the family would do things very differently if they could go back in time.

I agree he does look a serious brute but so do a lot of accepted breeds.

I have wondered a few times if ever, god forbid, I was in this position. My gut instinct would be to have pts rather than have my dog locked up for 2 years, but I suppose as long as there is that hope your dog would be released you would keep fighting. I think it unlikely he will be allowed to go to America, I hope his owners are able to spend some time with him before he is at last given peace.
