Hi

I am trying to get some lessons - but now have to pay for them myself!

What is the right price?

I have been given a lesson for £35 including petrol from a private lady.

Would you consider this alright?

For how long? And where? And is she qualified and insured?

In Surrey for an hour lesson with a BHS AI of moderate experience / recommendation I would expect to pay £30 -£45 for an hour but not travel costs on top of that. (It can be cheaper to go to them sometimes - if that is an option.)

For someone with higher qualifications, more / greater experience, or a specialist I would expect £50 an hour and going upward quite quickly!

To some extent cost reflects location so bear that in mind... but at the end of the day .. do you feel she/he justifies the cost?

I have a bhs instructor teach me. He charges me £20 an hour on my horse in the livery I use school. He's brilliant for what I want :)

I pay £40 for 45 mins to an hour (depending what we're doing - i'm happy to cut short if horse has done enough, but equally RI isn't a clock watcher and if we need more time we get it!) and thats for my RI to come out to me. She's ridden up to Grand Prix level.

I pay 25 for an hour, bhs pony club instructor, well worth it!! I know of some people who haven't got their teaching qualification who's ridiculously charge 35 an hour, and they are def not worth a penny! Choose carefully, and don't be afraid of changing if you don't feel you're getting on with lesson or instructor!

I pay £25 for 45mins with a rider that's been to st Georges grand prix. Shes brilliant and incredibly cheap for who she is. But shes also stabled at the same yard as myself so for elsewhere she probably charges fuel expenses.

That is the average I pay for general instructors for regular lessons I think anything higher is a little over the top.
I have paid £50 per lesson for less regular tuition with instructors currently competing at a high standard and I recently got quoted £70ph by one lady but that is ridiculous for my current level.

45 minute private with current jumping coach is £40 (used to pay £60).

I'm currently paying £30 for a 30 minute private flat lesson with someone who's on the French Olympic reserve team. Her partner charges £40/30 mins.

In the end, it's what you're willing to pay. I once paid £90 for a 45 minute 'clinic' with a visiting Olympic-level rider. Unfortunately I didn't get as much as I'd hoped out of it so won't be going back.

Down in the SE I pay £40 for about 45 mins to an hour, really depends on what we are doing, how its going etc. She doesn't clock watch and I don't mind cutting it short as its normally because things have gone well. I go to her so my travel (in lorry) is on top, this is with a level 3 show jumping coach.

I'm in South Wales and charge £30 a lesson.
I am fully insured and am doing my UKCC 2. You get what you pay for IMO.
Someone who claims to have ridden to a decent level, be fully insured etc would be struggling to charge much less than that. It then becomes your decision to decide what you want in a trainer.
