Always lunge in gloves!!!

Kenny currently has a lavage system in to try and clear the infection he had in his tear duct, meaning he can't be ridden as the bridle would interfere with it and he can't be turned out as rolling can pull it out of his eye. All I can really do with him is walk him round or lunge in a head collar. So understandably he is desperate for a good roll. I give him a scratchy brush every day but it'll never be as good as a roll.

So got him into the arena today to lunge him and suddenly felt the line go heavy.... Little sod had taken His chances and gone down in the school. So I was desperately trying to get him up before he went over so that he didn't pull his tube out. He eventually got up suddenly, let out a huge buck and cantered off....

I managed to keep hold of him but the line had got caught underneath my finger and as he took off ripped my nail off :( blood everywhere and very painful. Not to mention some lovely rope burn.

That'll teach me to stop being lazy and get my gloves out the car before lunging

It was definitely one of those pains where you want to swear lots and kick things!!

I have to say I've been told before always to wear gloves but sometimes get lazy and think "it'll be fine". Trust this to happen on one of those days!

Oooh yep, it's one of those things you only do once! I had a similar thing happen to me years ago when I was turning out a horse and when I shoved my hands in the water trough, they sizzled  I was 13 and knew the horse was a bit unreliable, really should have known better!

Sorry you found out the hard way, hope the pain has gone a bit now!

I have always worn gloves since lunging my friend's mare in leather gloves - looked at the gloves afterwards and she had worn a whole clean through them. Rather the gloves than my hand!
