When your horse is hopping lame always call the farrier first, (although in my defence I did try my farrier, but as he was not immediately available, panicked and got the vet out instead).......

When the vet 'mis-diagnoses' a simple abscess for a serious stifle injury, do not then spend hours on the internet scaring yourself silly over the implications of said 'mis-diagnosis'......

After 30 yrs of horse ownership you would have thought I would know better!
 
oh bless you, an expensive lesson too! I had a similar issue, my mare has never had an abscess and ive had her 13 yrs. so last year when my unshod 2yr old was hoping lame I pooped myself and called the vet without considering the farrier, luckily she found the abscess right away but cost me £150 for the privilege! next time the farrier came for £10!!

I once had to get vet and farrier at the same time to a suspected abscess as the mare needed sedation to pick her feet up properly. The vet injected and picked up her foot, couldn't find anything. The farrier looked very smug when he found abscesses in both hind feet!

Exactly the same happened with me. I called my vet, and told them that my boy had a hoof abscess. Vet came and diagnosed sever arthritis. Sold me drugs and charged for a call out and diagnosis. A week later when my boy was on 3 legs, I got a second emergency vet visit who diagnosed hoof abscess.

Just wish that my farrier wasn't on holiday - total vet visits + drugs has cost over £300 - farrier would have charged me about £40!!!!
 
My farrier always says to me if he goes hopping lame call him first ..but like u I have called the vet and £230 later pus came out the foot .. Farrier went crazy !! He would have sorted him for the price of a beer :/ so next time I will give him a call ( joke of it is he lives 10mins up the road )
