Extremely frustrated over death of foal. I reported (every day) very lethagic foal around 4 1/2 mths old, in herd but no dam. Not eating or drinking slowly deteriorating over 5 days, 2 inspectors visited during this time, on the last visit they still didn't think necessary to interveen and said to leave another few days. In LESS than 24 hrs after that visit the filly was dead. This leading charity obviously takes no notice of an experienced persons concerns, and in doing so caused this young horse to suffer for 5 days. I would greatly appreciate some input from some of you horse lovers. Foal was not mine by the way, but no less upsetting.

Must apologise very new to this forum thing, iv'e probably posted in haste, was rather stressed at the time. Is it poss to swap it to correct forum. I was just wondering if other people had had any similar experiences, as you can doubt your own handling of situation, should i have been more forcefull for eg.

You would need to start a new thread in tackroom to get it seem more and a better response although I suspect it will be much the same as normal, you did all you could and the foal was let down by those who had the power to act sooner rather than later, if it is the most obvious charity then it seems to be normal for them to let matters go too far, they forget the "prevention" part of their name and cannot see that a day may be too long for some.

I wonder what happened to the mare?

If you've reported to the people I think you may have done then they are worse than useless when it comes to horses.

I personally would be contacting them to put in a complaint and it that doesn't work I'd contact the local press to see if they are prepared to run an article.

I always contact BHS or WHW for welfare issues but Im also of the opinion that the public should be aware of what happens (or doesn't) in the case of horses.

Thankyou so much ladys for your comments, i am persuing a formal complaint and i've told them in future that i will report problems to the BHS or WHW so you can guess which other BIG charity it is thats involved. I do have a lot of experience both from the medical side and the horse side so i'm confident in my own assessment of the filly, but that makes no difference to them it seems. You are right tho some inspectors are just not qualified to assess signs and symptoms in a sick horse. Thankyou all again

I think you might be right with you're idea of which charity it is, they completely disregard the opinions of someone with even more experience than them. Don't know about the mare, although there had already been 2 dead mares, 2 dead foals another 2 foals i reported that were removed. Not good is it.
