I thought this letter was intersting in today's Observer:
As one of the 'civilised urban and suburban people' described by John Dodd, I would like to inform him that my primary support of the Hunting Act was not to do with a particular desire to 'help' wild animals. What I thought should be stopped was people deriving pleasure from chasing helpless animals with the intention of killing them in the name of sport.
Antony Jarrett
Beckenham, Kent
Was that the poiunt then? Not to make wild animals suffer less but to make people enjoy themselves less.
And if as John Dodd claims wild animals are actually suffering more as a result of the ban. Is the increase in animal suffering outweighed by the decrease in human enjoyment?
Do people have a right to cause animal suffering in order to enforce their moral viewpoint in others?
Maybe the ban really did have nothing to do with helping animals; maybe this ius born out by the fact that the Government has done absolutely nothing to investigate the animal welfare or conservation consequences of the ban on hunting.
