My gelding will NOT wee in his stable! He will hang on until he is desperate and then even get to the point of dribbling- but will not go..so now, every night when I do them last thing, I have to let him out into the paddock for a wee, then let him in again! Just off to do so now..eccentric horse or what!?

How bizarre! Mine's the opposite although possibly more the norm - I always have to put him in the stable for a wee before I ride him otherwise he has crossed legs and doesn't go so well.

What on earth would your horse do if he were on a typical livery yard he would have to go eventually? Does he not wee all night? Must be a real saving in bedding perhaps something we could all teach :D

Although I'm sure this could be annoying for you having to take him out I think its ever so sweet, he's saving his mummy from cleaning up, I wish my boy had this attitude! :D

He's just been out and had his late night wee! If I don't let him out he is truly desperate to go, literally dribbling, but he won't let it out whatever; I have never known him wee overnight. Whereas my mares' beds are sodden! I dont think my horses would do very well at a livery yard, they all have their little specialist ways; Ellie is even worse-a laminitic with a dust allergy who kicks the stable door if left in; can't imagine how a livery yard would cope with her!

Our mare's bed is always sodden, our gelding always comes into a fresh bed and pee's, if I put a bale of hay in the field, all the horses urinate on it, I think it is territorial, the gelding will pee over the mares pee site, causing grass scald, the old boy of 27 would follow suit as would the yearling filly.
I gave up a long time ago trying to figure my lot out.

I haven't managed to train my gelding that well but I've started training him to pooh in a large bucket. I just put the bucket behind him without touching him when he's doing it. i've done it for about the last week now and yesterday success, he put his tail up and looked at me until I put the bucket there and he did it but today he just walked around whilst poohing with me frantically trying to clear it up before he trashes it everywhere.

Oh well nver mind I will keep trying!

Obvious question I know but does he have a nice deep bed in his stable. Some horses won't stale if there's a risk it will splash up their legs. And if your horse is genuinely crossing his legs all night long, then it could be cause health problems. What do you turn hin out for a pee on, ie is it grass or a surface eg sand? If it was me, I'd make sure the bed was down and inviting, then I'd get a shovel and carefully lift the bit of paddock that he just peed on (either grass or sand) and lay it carefully in a corner of the stable. He might be happier to pee if he can smell it's a place where he's peed before. If that doesn't work, I'd experiment with a patch of different things in his stable eg shredded newspaper, straw, different bedding etc etc. He might be tempted if the surface feels more welcoming!

If all this fails, you'll have to install a loo.

My horse also pee's in a bucket. I put a large tubtrug in the middle of his bed and when i put him in he goes straight over to it. He likes to save it all up for in the stable so getting him to do one pee in the bucket saves on shavings. People always laugh when they see him doing it for the first time! (I don't leave the bucket in his stable by the way!)

My Connemara is very clean, he can last over 12hrs, it saves a lot of bedding (good shavings bed)
If he has to be in longer for any reason I take him a walk on grass, whistle and get a 'result',
he wont go in a bucket unfortunately even with bedding in the bottom!

I heard that holding it in for long periods of time can actualy damage the bladder and kidneys, maybe speak to your vet about getting him to wee in the stable

I once had a horse that wouldn't wee on shavings we moved him to straw and he was fine then, what bedding are you on?

My horse is the complete opposite im sure she saves all her wee and poo up from the field and does it during the night in her stable.. added to the fact she likes to chuck her water bucket around the stable too!

Mines had lami, and has a dust allergy but doesn't kick the door thank god !

My CJ was a pain - wouldn't matter how long he had been out he would ensure he saved it all for his bed!
He was on shavings...
Once i moved yards he was in an american barn style so he could see other horses - stopped doing this...almost like he didn't want to do it infront of other horses! :)
He now wee's and poos in his stable if in there overnight but no where near as bad - most of the time if he can hold it he will - saves my nice big bed from dwindling to nothing overnight! :)

I have 2 mares in my yard who will not wee in their stables - they have to go out for a wee last thing at night too! Both are on full shavings beds and rubber mats. Yet the gelding, who is next door wees the moment he hits his bed - every time!

I have tried to train my gelding to pee in a bucket, not with a great deal of success. I have to "catch it" he won't do it just to order! Maybe leaving the bucket in the stable is a good idea so it is there ready for him when he comes in. I have always thought it must be to make the stable "his."

Box_Of_Frogs, good point- and he is currently on rubber matting with little bedding; however for years he was on a normal deep bed and he was exactly the same! He is 10 now and I bred him, so touch wood it hasn't caused him any harm to date..agree it's not ideal though.
