A reply on a post earlier in the week has been playing on my mind.

What do you think 4 year olds should be doing?

My 2 (1 tbx and 1 tb ex racer) do 45 mins work 5 times a week. They work hard - I would say medium work, and do a variety of schooling and hacking, but probably 3 days hacking and 2 schooling. When hacking, the majority is in trot and canter (where appropriate) and I trot them up and down hills, on hard ground (slowy) When schooling, they are not pushed into outlines, but are taught to work through from behind, circle, flex, and do basic lateral work (shoulder in, leg yield) . Both could happily go out and do a prelim test, and the tb is competing affiliated prelims.
They jump very occasionally, both have only jumped three or four times in the school, however when we hack out if something is safe they are put over it (logs, small ditches etc)

I am taking one hunting tomorrow and the other next week, believing it is good for their education. I plan to hunt them all winter, whilst gradually upping their schooling work as their strength improves. This will also include more technical jumping/gridwork.

Am I doing too much? I am worried now as someone said they wouldnt gallop/jump a 4 year old. I think they have the muscle/strength to cope with the work load I am doing and both seem like 'well rounded' individuals, save the odd teenage tantrum, but am I doing the right thing? I cant beleive I am having a confidence crisis over something written on a forum, but its really bugging me... that I am not doing it right.

I dont think 2 days schooling a week and 3 days hacking is too much at all, about what ours get. And they jump too, as thats their job, shows, 4 yo classes etc!

tThey'll be quick enough tell you if they're doing too much, and every horse is different.

Thanks catcus. I was just worried! Mine not good enough for 4 year old sj classes yet....but aiming for intro next year (fingers crossed) hence the hunting.

My 4yo does 2 schooling sessions per week, one lunging session a week, 2 hacks (or walking out when I have nobody to come with me) a week, one day off and the seventh day is alternated between hacking and schooling each week...

I've jumped him a handful of times but more due to my own confidence rather than his ability to cope with it.

I think what you're doing sounds fine, your horses will be well educated and exposed to lots of sights early on, which I think is essential for a young horse and makes for a good solid 'take you anywhere' type.

i think that all horses are different- would say that my 4 year old is doing similar to yours, although jumps once or twice a week- but only little stuff and works in an outline. he's also been on a camp where he had 3 days of 1xsj and 1x xc lesson. he coped fine with this. i think they let you know when they need a break. mine had 5 weeks off in june/july as a 'brain-break' and is also aimed at BE next year. if he needs a break he'll get one but is coping fine....

I had my first lesson tonight on my new nag- my instructor said that due to age , wobblyness and general still need to grow ( he is very baby baby 5 yo) that he needs a max of 5 times a week and my 3/4 is fine. So as the peeps above have said every nag is different and i would trust your judgemnet xxx
