Hello! We have just bought a K reg DAF 45 130 (1993) and it needs some work on the electrics!

We have been searching for some kind of manual online, so we can understand everything a bit better...

The brake lights have stopped working. We have replaced the bulbs and checked the fuse and everything seems ok. Does anyone know what else we can check before getting an electrician out?

We are also wanting to connect up a leisure battery to the living, and have it charge off the starter battery when we are driving. Is this the best way to set it up?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated too! I am totally new at horsebox ownership and feel I'm on a steep learning curve!

If it is both lights then could well be a problem with the supply from the fuse box to the brake lights including the switch that operates the light when you press the brake pedal. Check the brake switch and see if when you depress it the power is coming out and if it is then check the cable to the brake lights. Have you go a meter to check the voltage?

I did exactly that with my Leyland Daf, leisure battery under one of the seats in the living. I had a couple of new lights fitted which ran off this, as the original interior lights came off the main battery and were dodgy (mine was a 92 model). I also had problems with the electrics, but mine was a starter issue, which was finally solved by replacing the whole ignition circuit.

Tips - make sure you start it every week through the winter and if possible give it a run out through the winter. And get yourself a good mechanic/garage on side. I loved my Daf, but boy, it cost me a fortune to get it plated every year - all those little things add up...

Hubby did this on our van conversion and suggests getting a split charge relay..he got his off ebay you will also need cables which is the expensive bit.
Weve run our van a couple of years now with no problems. He also put in a really straight forward electric hook up. Using a hook up cable and fitting a normal plug to the other end.

Thanks everyone for the tips on connecting up a leisure battery. At the moment there is just a car battery in a tack locker and it's totally dead. So all the electrics are there (I think), it just needs wiring up to a leisure battery. I'd really like to have a go at doing this myself, has anyone else done this when they began with having no idea a out electrics!!? ?

@PeterNatt thank you for your advice. We used a multimeter today. We had the same current coming out the switch regardless of whether the brake pedal was pressed or not. Would this be a sign of the brake switch being faulty? Or could it still be something else?

Honestly you need an hgv mechanic out to look at it it send it in.

Asking for advice on a forum for truck electrics is not going to be helpful.
It could be a number of things from a short in the wiring along the way or right back in the loom.

With regs to the battery, we have two 12vs running of a split charge from the main battery.
Works well for us.

Dad is a hgv mechanic so I know a bit more about it than most.

Incidentally what are you wanting to run off the battery?
I have an inverter in my wagon run off an anderson lead from the battery. I use it for a microwave a hair drier a mini hoover and a kettle. The inverter is 2000 watt and my appliances are all very much under that. A pure syn one means you dont get surges..i use it all week every week with no problems.
